BRISTOL VICTORY TOUR: 2001
| This year
we arrived at Bristol for the district judging (the northeast
section of South Dakota) of the National History Day project with a
compliment of 12 young historians from NSU, ready for a full day of
history lovin'! And this year Bristol hosted the largest number of
student projects ever, too. Students came from Aberdeen, Wilmot,
Bristol, and Britton schools to partake in the day-long event.

Presenting the 2001 NSU judging team! In the front, from left to
right, we have Liz, Jodi (living the dream of being a history
student just for the day), Wes and Mikie (aaaaarrrrrrrrr!). And in
the back, left to right, we have Shanna, Matt, Greg
(arrrrrrrrrrrrr!), Will, Scott, Dan, and Houston. And lastly, Docta
Luv, proud prof of his history kids, stretching out on top. Go
Pirates! |

Wes, Jodi, and Liz review a poster on the history of the telephone. Projects are divided into junior and senior divisions, then are further broken down into the categories of posters, dramatic productions, video documentaries, and papers. The old saying is certainly true: So much history, so little time. |

The judging teams look for strengths and weaknesses in the projects by analyzing the presentation and also by talking with the young historians about their work. Our job in judging is to acknowledge the positive elements in projects and make suggestions for improvement. Wait . . . the judging team finds a point that needs to be addressed. Liz goes in for the kill! |

Wielding clipboards, not to mention substantial experience in actually doing history in their classes at NSU, Greg, Mike, and Matt evaluate a poster on the evolution of rock-n-roll. |

And what would our yearly trip to Bristol be without spending some quality time in their school cafeteria? Here the NSU judging team shows how to get the job done right. Shanna shows the correct way to consume a tater tot (firmly grasped between thumb and index finger - great form, girl!). Greg inhales yet another Polish sausage in one bite, blessing us all with a rare moment of silence. Matt asks the proverbial question, "Does Bristol 'got milk'?" Oh yeah, baby! And Dan is smiling because he's happy that my camera did not pick up the ketchup he had dribbled all over the front of his shirt. The kidies in the background are hoping they can grow up to be as cool as these NSU scholars. Dare to dream, little ones. |

Every year the good folks at Bristol School treat us like royalty.
Social studies teacher Loren Lutz and the entire staff at Bristol do
a great job of hosting. Here are the ladies who put out the spread
for us in the cafeteria. Welcome to flavor country!

Go!
Fight! Win! We had an outstanding
time in Bristol again his year! And who is that in the middle, between Greg and Mike? Hmmm, evil glare, foul mouth, surrounded by flames, horns projecting from his head . . . let's see could it be, oh, I don't know . . . SATAN??? |
