HISTORY MAJORS


The History Major at NSU requires a total of 39 credits.  HIST 121 and 122 are prerequisites to all advanced non-U.S. courses (300 and 400- series), and HIST 152 is a  prerequisites to HIST 356 and HIST 362. All regular NSU history courses are 3 credits. No grade below a "C" will be accepted in a history course taken to fulfill the major requirements. All history majors must graduate with at least a 2.50 cumulative grade point average in the major. Below are the course requirements for NSU's two bachelor degrees in history. Student
Lower Division World Civilization (6 credits)
  • HIST 121, 122, History of Western Civilization I & II
Lower Division U.S. History  (6 credits)
  • HIST 151, 152, U. S. History  I & II

Upper Division U.S. History (choose from 2 of the following to total 6 credits)

  • HIST 350 - American Colonial History
            This variable topic course focuses on a particular subject each semester. HIST 350 may be repeated for different topics, which include Colonial America and 19th Century U.S. History.
  • HIST 356 - Recent U.S. History
            This variable topic course focuses on a particular subject each semester.  HIST 356 may be repeated for different topics, which include U.S. 1890-1940, U.S.1940-Present, the Cold War, and the U.S. in the 1960s.
  • HIST 362 - 20th Century Frontier

Upper Division European History (choose from 2 of the following to total 6 credits

  • HIST 322 - Ancient History
            This variable topic course focuses on a particular subject each semester. HIST 322 may be repeated for different topics, which include the Early Church, the Hebrews, Ancient Greece, and Ancient Rome.
  • HIST 325 - Medieval History
  • HIST 327 - Early Modern History
            This variable topic course focuses on a particular subject each semester. HIST 327 may be repeated for different topics, which include the French Revolution and Napoleon, and the Reformation.
  • HIST 330 - French Revolution and Napoleon
  • HIST 341 - English History to 1688
  • HIST 393 - Seminar in European History
  • HIST 420 - Contemporary Europe

Upper Division Non-Western History (3 credits)

  • HIST 312 - History of Modern Asia
  • HIST 313 - History of the Middle East
  • HIST 443 - Russia Under the Tsars

HIST 480, Seminar in Historical Research and Writing (3 credits)
