Message from Dean Dr. C. G. 'Tino' Mendez
Welcome to the website of the NSU College of Arts and Sciences. We like to thinkCelestino 'Tino' Mendez
of our college as the "heart and soul" of NSU - the place where the core disciplines of history, sociology, philosophy, political science and geography;  the  languages, literature, and communication studies;  biology, chemistry and physics and mathematics  come together to guide your learning about the world and beyond and to help you discover new knowledge.
This is the place where you will have an opportunity to unearth your inner self and come alive, encounter the legacy of our past, and come to appreciate the power and the fragility of our humanity.  This is the place where passions are stirred and nurtured as we uncover the value of life and the transcendence of the spirit.  This is the place where you will learn all you need to know to start your journey on the road to a successful, meaningful, and rewarding life.

Our degree programs deliver a truly outstanding liberal arts education at the price of a public state university.  We form, educate, and train highly qualified and successful professionals. Our graduates work in criminal justice, public relations, human services, and science labs. They serve as biologists, statisticians, physical therapists, medical lab scientists, social workers, personnel managers, teachers, writers, actuaries, and forensic scientists. Others attend graduate and professional schools to become doctors and lawyers, ministers, nurses, college professors, or CEOs.

We spent over $2.7 million renovating our science building.  We now have brand-new labs in microbiology, genetics, anatomy and physiology, botany, environmental science, chemistry, physics, forensic science, biotechnology, and mathematics, with cutting-edge technology and all-new “smart” classrooms.  In addition, we have invested over $1 million in a mobile computing initiative to improve our technological infrastructure and redesign our courses.  Our whole campus in now wireless, our faculty has received numerous grants to support “Anytime, Anywhere” classes, and our students are expected to bring and use laptops in those classes.

Recent studies have shown that workers in today's entrepreneurial environment change careers four times during their lives. A solid liberal arts education provides students the breadth of knowledge,  perspective and insight, and analytical skills for the lifelong learning necessary to remain marketable in the global economy of the 21st century.

In the College of Arts and Sciences, you will have small classes in your major and you will get to know your faculty on a personal level and they will know you by your first name. If you have questions about any of our programs, our faculty will be happy to talk to you. Contact information is available on each department home page.  Please feel free to contact me directly at 605-626-2601 or at
All the best,
Dr. C. G. “Tino” Mendez, Dean, College of Arts and Sciences
