Pre-Professional Programs at NSU

Aiming to earn a degree in medicine, law, engineering, or another professional specialty? A degree from Northern can get you in the door.

Professional degrees require completion of a baccalaureate degree first.  At Northern, you can prepare by pursuing related majors or selecting general education and elective courses within your degree to meet initial requirements of your chosen professional degree offered at another school.

Northern's advisors will work closely with you, using the catalog from your chosen professional school, to determine acceptable core course selections and the electives for your professional degree plans.

Health Field Options include (Pre-) Dentistry, Medicine, Physician’s Assistant, Nursing, Optometry, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Veterinary Medicine. A strong science or math background is beneficial for students wishing to pursue careers in these areas. Most Northern students planning a career in the medical field choose to major in Biology. See below for information on Pre-Nursing and Accelerated Nursing at Northern.

Pre-Athletic Training
The pre-professional program in athletic training will prepare you for entrance into an approved undergraduate athletic training curriculum program. You can apply for admission into an approved program as early as the spring of your sophomore year, or you may complete a four-year degree at Northern and apply for admission to an approved graduate athletic training program. Learn more about Northern's pre-athletic courses in the NSU Catalog.

Chiropractic Health Care
Several colleges of chiropractic health care require you to have a baccalaureate degree for admission, and you can earn this through Northern's College of Arts and Sciences. If you're interested in the chiropractic field, contact Northern's department of Biology, Math, Chemistry & Physics for advice on course selection.

Pre-Engineering
It's easy for students to take two years of pre-engineering courses at Northern, then transfer to another state school to earn an engineering degree; Northern's cooperative agreements with the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and South Dakota State University smooth the way.

Pre-Journalism
Headed for J-school? Northern's advisors will help you design your degree to prepare you for journalism school specialization: news-editorial, radio-television, photojournalism, magazine journalism, mass communications, advertising or public relations. Using the professional school catalog from the college or university to which your transfer is planned, you'll work with your advisor to ensure you have the necessary courses, including foreign language or electives. Students interested in journalism should contact the coordinator of the department of English and Linguistics.

Pre-Law
NSU graduates have been accepted into law school programs.  Students with this interest might consider majors such as Communication Studies, English, History or Political Science.

Mortuary Science
Northern can help you customize your degree to prepare you for transfer to a professional program in Mortuary Science.

If you're  interested in this program, contact the department of Biology, Math, Chemistry & Physics.

Pre-Nursing
The first two years of study towards your bachelor's degree in nursing can take place right here at Northern, which has a cooperative program with the fully accredited College of Nursing at South Dakota State University. SDSU offers a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in nursing - now the recommended degree for entry into a professional nursing career. At Northern, you should complete as many as possible of the basic science and general education requirements before transferring, to ensure flexibility in planning and scheduling of courses at SDSU.
