What is the Supreme Court Experience?

The Supreme Court Experience is a one-credit class offered by Northern State University. It involves the observation of a variety of cases heard by the state Supreme Court and the writing of a paper which will analyze the facts presented during the arguments.

How does the Supreme Court Experience apply to my students?

Participation in this class will expose students to a broader understanding of the South Dakota Supreme Court and the appellate process. Students will have the opportunity to listen to oral arguments made by attorneys and questions asked by the Justices. The cases being argued before the Supreme Court deal with timely issues such as search and seizure, property rights, and child custody disputes. These are issues that may impact everyone.

How can I incorporate the Supreme Court Experience into my high school classes?

The Supreme Court Experience can be used in classes such as: History, Social Science, Speech, Communications, Sociology, and Political Science. On these pages, you can find ideas on how to incorporate this exciting class into your own course curriculum.

How would my students benefit from participating in the Supreme Court Experience?

Students would enhance their analytical, research, and writing skills. Also, they would become more knowledgeable about the criminal justice system and its impact on the citizens of this state. In addition, students who successfully completed the course would receive one credit from Northern State University!
