EXCHANGE STUDENTS


Welcome to Northern State University! 

We are very pleased that you will be spending an exchange semester or year with us on our beautiful campus in Aberdeen, South Dakota.  Aberdeen is located in the Midwest United States, three hours from Fargo, North Dakota and Sioux Falls, South Dakota.  A city of Midwestern hospitality mixed with metropolitan progressiveness, Aberdeen provides an exceptional quality of life.   

Application procedures:

1. Contact your home university coordinator.

2. Fill out all necessary home university application forms.

3. Complete Northern State University application forms:
a) Exchange Student Application Form
b) Immunization form
c) Declaration of Finances Form and bank statement (showing proof of funds)
d) Residence Hall Application with $50 USD deposit

Also required with your application are the following documents:
e) Official transcript of university courses (must be in English)

4. Send complete application packet to Northern State University at:

5. Applications will be processed in the order that they are received. Incomplete applications will not be processed.  Please note that applications take approximately 2-4 weeks to be processed. 

6. Your home university coordinator will receive your acceptance letter, finance guarantee statement and I-20 document. 

7. You are responsible for obtaining a student visa at the US Embassy in your country.  All fees associated with the visa process are paid by the student.

8. Send the NSU coordinator your arrival schedule. We will arrange to meet you at the airport when you arrive in Aberdeen. 

Application deadlines:  For priority application, we suggest you follow the deadlines listed below.  Late applications will be accepted, however, we cannot guarantee processing in 2-4 weeks after the deadline.

Fall semester (August-December): April 15
Spring semester (January-May): November 15

3 Health Insurance must be purchased from an insurance provider designated by NSU. For more information on health insurance please view the insurance enrollment form and insurance policy brochure
 

4 A meal plan is mandatory for those under 21 years of age, or those who have not reached Junior Class Status. 

Fees are generally paid within the first three weeks of arriving.  International Students are given an extra week due to the logistics of international payment. Payment is accepted in the form of cash, money order (payable to: NSU), US$ travelers checks, or credit card (MasterCard, Discover, American Express only.  We do not accept VISA). 

Additional Expenses Include:
11. Textbooks - An estimate for the cost of books is $450 per semester                    
12. Personal expenses (transportation, entertainment, etc.)
