Northern State University Local Network/Internet Access and E-mail Policies and Procedures
Policies
Northern State University reserved the right to
limit, restrict, or extend access to its network
and internet connection. It is not to be used
for commercial purposes or private profit or
non-University related activities without
written authorization from the University.
Northern State University treats policy
violations of computing facilities, equipment,
software, information resources, networks or
privileges seriously. Disciplinary action
resulting from such abuse may include the loss
of computing privileges and other sanctions
including non-renewal, discharge, and dismissal.
Alleged violations of the policy shall be
processed according to the judicial processes
outline in the SDBOR/COHE Higher Education
Contract, the Faculty Handbook, and the Student
Handbook. Northern State University may also
prosecute abuse under the Computer Fraud and
Abuse Act of 1986, or other appropriate laws.
Messages in the electronic mail system may be
subject to discovery during litigation and
disclosed in court proceedings. One thing to
remember is that messages can be easily
forwarded to third parties without any control
by the original sender. A good rule of thumb is
to assume that either your loved ones or your
worst enemy will have access to whatever you
send by e-mail. Do not send inappropriate
messages to others. Types of messages that fall
into this category include threatening, abusive,
sexually explicit, harassing, chain letters,
fraudulent and illegal messages.
The act of logging on the network indicates your acceptance of the above terms and conditions.
Network Logon Id’s
Students who pre-register are issued a network
logon by the beginning of the term. The login id
may be picked up at the Computer Services window
in the lower level of the Administration
Building. Students who continue their attendance
will retain their login id for future terms.
Students who do not pre-register will be issued
a login id within 2 days after we receive
notification of their registration.
Faculty, Administrators, and Support Staff will
be issued a network logon upon request to the
Network Administrator.
Network and Internet Access
On campus, network and free Internet Access is
provided through the various computer labs and
through the library. Network access is available
in all the Residence Halls. There is no
additional charge for this service. To take full
advantage of this, NSU recommends that students
come to campus with their own computers.

least 256 mb of RAM and Win2000 or greater(or
MACswith OS7 or higher)and with a 10/100
Ethernet card. Ethernet cards, patch cables, and
installation instructions may be purchased as a
package from Computer Services. Every machine
must be complete the Cisco Clean Access Agent
process before the machine will be allowed
connection to the network. Symantec Anti-Virus
is offered free of charge to students in and its
installation is part of the Clean Access
process.
For students living off campus, internet access
may be obtained from one of several local
Internet service providers.
A limited number of lines are available for Dial-in network access. For information, contact Computer Services.
