Reflection on Teaching
and Goals for Improvement
Based on Video Clips Included
in Portfolio
Watching yourself on
video in an effort to critique yourself is an uncomfortable experience.
I have found that you need to watch the video several times so that you
can get past those initial feelings related to the surface issues, like
how you look on video, how your voice sounds, and whether or not you are
having a bad hair day! Once you get past those issues you can concentrate
on self-evaluation related to your teaching methods, your presentation
style, student engagement, etc. Based on my self-evaluation from
the video of my students and I presenting a Kick Butts Day activity to
6th graders in Waubay I observed the following about myself:
-
Although I use appropriate grammar and speak
clearly I do the same things I citicize my students for doing - I say "Um",
"you guys" and "gonna."
-
I believe that I have a commanding presence
in the classroom. I am purposeful in my teaching, but easy-going
at the same time. I think this appeals to my students and allows
me to hold their attention.
-
I used multiple methods of instruction in
this presentation, especially questionning requiring not only yes or no
answers but answers based on critical thinking.
-
I engaged the students in their learning through
questionning, participation in straw activities, counting their pulse,
and working cooperatively with partners.
-
Following the introductory activity I conducted
a review of the material presented to ensure understanding.
-
At the conclusion of the presentation I questioned
the students about what they had learned and gave them an opportunity to
ask questions or make comments.
-
I involved not only my students in the teaching
and learning process but also the 6th graders at Waubay.
-
I modeled for my students, the appropriate
use of technology in a distance learning setting.
Goals for improvement include the following:
-
I need to become more aware of the "local"
dialogue I use and make sure that I am speaking clearly and not using words
like "Um" too often.
-
I need to maintain my standards of teaching
and continually strive to improve myself through frequent self-assessments.
-
When teaching with distance technology I need
to keep in mind the lag time between speaking and hearing the response
so I increase my wait time when questionning.
