With 50+ years of accumulated rust, dirt, and crud on the Kaiser's
frame, just the thought of cleaning and painting it made me cry like a
little girl. Dabbing my eyes, I considered several options, most of which
started my upper lip quivering. Then I learned about a local guy,
Ken Frohling, who has a welding/machine/powder coat shop in Hecla, SD.
He said he could sand blast off the hard stuff, power wash the grease and
goo, and give it a coat of powder (30-40% gloss black). Heck, he even picked
up and delivered. I jumped at it. The finished product is backing up to
my garage here, July 2003. |
| Pictured here is the newly powder coated frame, residing on jack stands
in my garage (and next to the body). Ken did a magnificent job on
the Kaiser's frame, removing every spec of icky stuff and applying a flawless
surface, completely free of sags, runs, and thin spots. I have heard that
it is as tough or tougher than any paint I think, and stands up well to
corrosion, while being beautiful. I'm starting to cry again . . . |

Here's a close-up of a powder coated a-arm, part of the front suspension.
Sniff - pass the Kleenex. |
| Check out the detail on the frame! The cross member at the bottom
center of the picture supports the transmission. It might be a little unclear
on this photo, but powder coating, as protective as it is, leaves visible
even subtle texture of the metal. Sold yet? If so, call Ken at Frohling's
Powder Coating at 605-994-2124. Tell him Ric sent you. |
