Publications and Presentations

In 2003, I gave a collaborative presentation with Jackie Omland Titled:
CP Physics E-learning – Two Years of Experiences” at the April E-learning conference at NSU. The presentation was published in the conference proceedings.

A paper titled “Teaching Experiences, Methods and Techniques in E-learning Environment” was published in the “World Conference on Open Learning
and Distance Education, Hong Kong” Conference proceedings – Jan 2003 (Collaborated with Mark Zaidel)

Presentation on digital video analysis and simulations and lead a discussion group entitled “Using simulations in the Sciences” at the January, 2000
meeting in Pierre.

Presentation: Computers in the Physics/Physical Science Classroom

South Dakota Science Teachers Assoc. & Council of Teachers of Mathematics
Joint Conference in Feb 1995.

Presentation: Using Computer Controlled Laser disk Players in Introductory
Physics Laboratories
, American Association of Physics Teachers Regional
Meeting, Nov 1994.

Presentation: Integrating computers into the Physics Classroom, Teaching
in the Next Century Conference, Sept/Oct, 1994.

Presentation: Integrating Computers in the Physics Classroom, Northern Conference on Teaching and Learning, August, 1994

Conferences Attended

In August, 2003, I attended the national American Association of Physics Teachers National meeting in Madison, Wisconsin.  Based on several
workshops that I took I was able to adopt several new innovative teaching strategies (Interactive Lecture Demonstrations – ILDs and Learn Anywhere, Anytime Physics - LAAphysics)

Attended the American Association of Physics Teachers National Meeting in Lincoln, Nebraska in August 1998.  Took workshops in “Website Physics”,
“Just-in-Time Teaching” (using simulations written in Java Script) and “CGI,
Perl and Webserver”.

Attended the South Dakota Academy of Science Annual Meeting, April 25 & 26,1997.

Research

2005 - I developed new Microcomputer Based Laboratories: Intensity vs
distance
, Polarization, and Double Slit Interference and Diffraction.

2004 - I developed new Microcomputer Based Laboratories: Centripetal Force, Physical Pendulum,  and R-L circuit..

See also “Honors and Awards” for further recent research activities.

Service

I collaborated with the AP Physics Course by Jackie Omland in the E-learning Center and Mark Farrand at Central High School in Rapid City. This
collaboration occurred from Fall, 2001 through the Spring, 2005.

I taught the first half of the Elearning Center High School College Prep Physics Course by distance delivery (Jackie Omland taught the second half). This
course was developed to help students qualify for the new South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship Program that was newly implemented in the summer
of 2004.

I did a “DDN” presentation titled “My Favorite Physics Demonstrations” in December, 2003 to 3 schools (20 students). This was part of the NSU College
of Arts and Sciences My Favorite Topic Series.

I developed the E-learning CP Physics course in the Summer of 2001 and
taught the E-learning CP Physics as an overload during Fall 2001 – Spring 2002.

Collaboration with South Dakota Native American Mathematics Enhancement Program by designing and performing computer based laboratories in physics. Summer, 96, 97, 98

Presentation: a workshop (along with Abid Elkhader and Jeff Jay) to Native American Teachers at the “Promise School”.  This was a regional in-service for three BIA elementary schools and we gave computer demonstrations in mathematics and science, demonstrated Internet usage in math and science, and hands on science activities.  July, 1996

Applied for and became a participant in the Dakota Interconnect Project.  This provides high speed Internet accesses through the fiber optic cable TV network in Aberdeen.  Participation started in Aug 96 and continued through Apr 1997.

Honors and Awards

Received an Advanced Governor’s Grant titled “University Physics Active
Learning with Technology Enhancement
” for the summer of 2002. See:
