CURRENT ADMINISTRATIVE POSITIONS
CIO (Chief Information Officier) (July 1, 2001 - present)
As Chief Information Officer (CIO), I oversee all information technology
(NET Services) employees on campus and represent the university's technology
interests at the state level by serving on the Technology Affairs Council
(TAC).
Director of the NSU Center for Statewide E-Learning (February 2001
– present)
The Center for Statewide E-Learning is a newly approved $3 million
program for the university to integrate distance delivery technology across
the university curriculum and to delivery courses to high schools throughout
South Dakota using Dakota Digital Network and Internet technologies. This
mission enhancement was endorsed by the S.D. Board of Regents and Governor
Janklow in January 2001 and passed by the legislature and signed into law
in March. As Center Director, I oversee the hiring of new E-learning
personnel, and direct the implementation of the Center’s infrastructure
and programming.
Executive Assistant to the President (1999 – present)
As Executive Assistant to the President, I serve on Senior Staff (the
primary policy-making board on campus), coordinate strategic planning for
the university, chair the Institutional Review Board that oversees all
human subjects research by faculty, staff and students at the university,
and assist the President with special projects as the need arises.
PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIVE EXPERIENCE
Director of the NSU Office of Instructional Services (OIS) (1996
– 2001)
As OIS Director, I design and coordinate all faculty development activities
on campus. The office is funded through a combination of South Dakota state,
NSU Foundation, and private grant funds. My duties include grant-writing,
administration of funds to support faculty travel to professional meetings,
design and delivery of faculty development programming to enhance the quality
of teaching and student assessment on campus, and design and delivery of
orientation programming for new faculty.
NSU Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs (1998-1999)
The Vice President for Academic Affairs is the chief academic officer
of the university. I was appointed to the Interim position in March 1999.
In this capacity I oversaw all academic programs and personnel at the university
and represented the university at the state level on the Academic Affairs
Council and at South Dakota Board of Regents meetings. During this
time, I successfully worked with the faculty to revise the university's
general education curriculum and the requirements for B.A, B.S., and B.S.
Ed. degrees. I also worked with the NSU Assessment Director to obtain
North Central Accreditation approval of the university's academic assessment
program.
S.D. Administrator for Eisenhower Mathematics & Science Higher
Education Program (1990-1996)
The Eisenhower Mathematics and Science Education Program was a $300,000
a year federal entitlement program to which higher education faculty could
apply for funds to offer teacher-training workshops in the areas of K-12
mathematics and science education. As administrator, I aligned the South
Dakota program goals with the national standards for mathematics and science
as recommended by NCTM, NSTA and the AAAS, and developed and advertised
the program guidelines to all higher education institutions (public, private,
and tribal) in the state. As administrator, it was my responsibility to
oversee the program budget and funding procedures, evaluate each funded
project, and file annual program reports to the federal government. I also
represented South Dakota at annual national meetings for the Eisenhower
Program in Washington, D.C.
NSU Director of NSF-SSI (National Science Foundation Statewide Systemic
Initiative Grant Project) to reform K-12 science education in South Dakota
(1992 - 1996)
Because of my role as Eisenhower Program Administrator for South Dakota,
in 1991 I was appointed by the South Dakota Board of Regents to a state-level
advisory committee to develop a grant proposal to the National Science
Foundation to reform K-16 science education across the state. Through the
efforts of this committee and the writing team, South Dakota was granted
$7.5 million over the next five years. The grant was structured in such
a way that higher education institutions in the state were required to
partner with K-12 districts to submit proposals to the state NSF-SSI office.
I was appointed to lead Northern State University’s efforts to collaborate
with K-12 districts in South Dakota. During the 5 years of funding, I worked
as a consultant for school districts from more than 14 towns to help the
K-12 teachers and administrators understand mathematics and science curriculum
reform recommendations from national organizations such as NSTA, NCTM,
and AAAS.
I assisted teams from these districts as they wrote their curriculum
reform and faculty development plans. Northern State University's collaborative
efforts with K-12 districts proved to be the most successful in the state.
During the first year of competition for NSF-SSI funds, 13 projects across
South Dakota were funded, of these, 6 were partnered with NSU, representing
a 100% success rate for that year. Throughout the project, I coordinated
NSU faculty delivery of services to these districts in the areas of mathematics
and science curriculum redesign and implementation of innovative teaching
strategies, such as inquiry science, cooperative learning, alternative
assessment, and hands-on instructional techniques. In 1993, I wrote a successful
NSF-SSI proposal for $100,000 to reform mathematics and science education
at NSU. Over the next three years, I worked with mathematics, science,
and education faculty to reform the curriculum and implement innovative
teaching strategies in university teacher preparation courses.
NSU Director of Environmental Education (1986 - present)
As Director of Environmental Education, I offer numerous educational
outreach activities to K-12 schools and provide Project WILD and Project
Learning Tree certification training to all education majors at NSU and
to in-service teachers in South Dakota. Examples of outreach activities
include bird-banding presentations to 6th grade classes, visiting scientist
presentations to K-6 classrooms, environmental science programs for Girl
Scout groups, and development and administration of an annual South Dakota
natural history Earth Day crossword puzzle contest for all 4th - 6th grade
students within 100 miles of Aberdeen, SD. I also coordinated the development
and wrote grants to obtain funding to produce The Natural Source, an Educator’s
Guide to South Dakota’s Natural History. This resource was written by faculty
and natural resource specialists from around the state and provided free-of-charge
to more than 3,000 South Dakota teachers. I served as the Natural Source
project coordinator and editor. These materials were posted on the Internet
in 1999 (http://lupus.northern.edu:90/natsource/ )
