85 years of tradition
Northern State University commenced its 85th Gypsy Day celebration on Monday, Sept. 25 with a Romani cultural speaker to kick off the week’s events. The theme this year is, “Make ‘Em Cry Wolf!” (Full Story)

Meal plan changes affect NSU students
Northern State University students were in for a surprise on the first day of classes as they were informed that the Student Center was not open to students with meal plans. Since the closing of Lincoln Dining Hall in the fall of 1999, the opening of the dining facility in the Student Center has been under controversy. (Full Story)

Big tobacco and freedom of choice
Before I tackle this week’s topic, I have to respond to some questions people have asked me about the whole Bush campaign subliminal (or in Bush's words "subliminable") message ad, in which the word "rats" flashes on the screen for a nano-second. Wolves knock off Golden Bears; lose to Beavers
On a hot and steamy Saturday afternoon, the Wolves hosted the Golden Bears of the University of Concordia-St. Paul. The Wolves and the Golden Bears faced off at Swisher field on Sat. Sept. 16. The Bears came into the game with high hopes of knocking off the defending Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, however, they would be denied that chance. (Full Story)

Wolves volleyball opens conference season with 1-1 record
Northern State University took part in the NSIC-NCC Crossover tournament on September 8 and 9. They took on the St. Cloud Huskies and the University of South Dakota Coyotes on Friday, and played Minnesota State University-Mankato on Saturday. The Wolves finished the tourney with a record of 2-1. (Full Story)

Wolves soccer dominates USF
The Northern State University soccer team notched a couple of W’s last weekend without even facing a single shot on goal. The Wolves claimed victories over the University of Sioux Falls and Concordia-Seward (Neb.) On Saturday, Sept. 15, the Wolves locked horns with the University of Sioux Falls. With an overpowering offense and an air-tight defense, the Wolves took USF behind the woodshed and handed them an 8-0 drubbing. (Full Story)

Chaser fulfills musical dream in Fargo, ND
Five college-aged guys fulfilled a musical dream this summer by performing for thousands of people at a make-up Korn concert. Judd Albrecht,bass; Clayton Otto, vocals and guitar; Brian “Beej” Johnson, vocals; Will Schulz,drummer; and Justin “Kal” Kallas, guitar, make up Chaser a band that is less than two years old. Chaser was given the opportunity to share the stage with hardrock band, Korn after receiving an invitation to play in a “Battle of the Bands” which was sponsored by Q-98 a radio station in Fargo. Counseling center offers support at NSU
The Counseling Center offers free, confidential counseling to students. Along with individual services, six support groups exist. They include Choosing a Major, Chronic Illness, Learning Disabilities, Making Peace with Food, Options, and Rape Support/Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. (Full Story)

Supplemental Instruction program new to NSU, University College
Northern State University has started a supplemental instruction program to help the NSU students pass their classes. “The mission of these groups is to help students to learn the important information from lecture and text in many of the classes that incoming freshman are registered in,” Lisa Ducheneaux, reading and writing coordinator, said. NSU students enjoy science retreat at camp NeSoDak
Activities were in abundance for new and returning students at Northern State University, who went on a small weekend getaway with Keith Wrage and other science faculty members. The students traveled to camp NeSoDak for a getting to know each other mixer over the weekend. The group left on Friday at 5:00 P.M. and returned on Sunday, their activities included such things as watching movies, making candles in the sand, eating smores until they where sick and a camera scavenger hunt. Student Association: Vote, your tuition may count on it
Hello once again, from the Student Association. Well, we have held our first two meetings of the year and already we are busy working on things to make your college experience a better one. At our first meeting we toured a couple facilities on campus as possible sites for the fitness center, for example, the old Lincoln Dining Hall. (Full Story)
