Northern
State University annually hosts a high school arts workshop for students
in the surrounding area. This year marks the eleventh annual
Invitational High School Exhibition and Workshop. In this workshop,
students from local area high schools are given the opportunity to
learn new art skills as well as participate in a contest of art that
they submitted to be judged. Each year five winners are chosen
for projects that they submit for judging by NSUs professors.
One of the winners from the last two years, freshman Crystal Weller,
Aberdeen, designed the artwork on the advertisements for this years
event. Weller is majoring in art at NSU and is hoping to specialize
in fine arts.
When asked about her experience with the Invitation High School Exhibition
and Workshop she said, The whole purpose of the workshop is
to introduce students to the public, and to what Northern can provide
for art students. Other contests she has been involved in include
The Greenery, Federal Duck Stamp, Reflections, and the Sioux Falls
Horse Barn.
I came to NSU because [I] was introduced to the great program
offered for art here at NSU, said Weller, which is why the workshop
is important.
The Arts Workshop is scheduled to take place on Fri., Oct. 22 from
10a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and will be held in Spafford and Dacotah Halls.
Students can register their artwork starting on that day at 8:30 a.m.,
and awards will be given out at 12 p.m.
The top five winner will each receive $50. The artwork given
these awards will be exhibited from Oct. 15 to Oct. 29 upstairs in
the Student Center.
The Invitational High School Exhibition and Workshop offers a unique
opportunity for students to both learn new skills and be introduced
to what the NSU art program has to offer. |
