Wolves 20 - Neb.-Kearney 10
Right before the game was to start on Sept. 11, starting sophomore
quarterback Toby Korrodi, San Antonio, Tex., was called away because
of a family emergency. That meant freshman quarterback Andrew Corre,
Denver, Colo., was going to get his first career start. He did just
fine as the Wolves (1-1) go on to defeat Nebraska-Kearney (1-2)
20-10.
Corre started off the game in style with a 52 yard touchdown pass
to senior wide receiver Matt Pinto, Sonoma, Calif., on the fourth
play from scrimmage.
Corre finished the day 13 for 26 with 165 yards and a score. The
offensive line gave great protection to the quarterback, not allowing
one sack on 26 pass attempts.
The offensive line also created a great running lane for NSU’s
running backs junior Rudy Jones, Sacramento, Calif., and freshman
Tavis Ve’e, Alameda, Calif. Jones had 31 carries for 117 yards and
a touchdown, and Ve’e had 12 carries for 14 yards.
The Wolves defense gave up 361 yards of total offense in the game
but got the job done holding the Lopers to just ten points.
On defense, senior cornerback T.J. Johnson, Groton, and sophomore
Misi Finau, Sacramento, Calif., both grabbed their second interceptions
of the season, and junior Shawn Warren, Arp, Tex., grabbed his first.
Warren's interception came with 1:38 left in the game as the Lopers
were driving. He picked off an Eric Perry pass in the endzone and
returned it twenty yards to seal the win for the Wolves. For his
efforts in the game, he was named NSIC Defensive Player of the Week
for the week of Sept 19. Warren is the first Wolf to earn NSIC Defensive
Player of the Week honors this season.
