The NSU Men’s and Women’s Rugby clubs traveled to Lemars, Iowa, on Sept. 18. The groups participated in the University of Northern Iowa rugby one day tournament.

The women’s team was matched up against South Dakota State University and the University of Northern Iowa. Unfortunately, the team lost both of their games by very close margins. “Our team has really good defense right now. We held the other teams well, and that’s definitely our strong point. We could make that point even better for our team if we had some more girls to play. We played this tournament with an incomplete team and maybe could have had a different outcome if we’d had some more players,” junior Nicole Huber, Ethan, team captain and club president, said.

The men’s team brought six players and played between four and seven games. They played with a group called the G.O.A.T.S., which is a group of rugby all stars from Nebraska. “Our strongest area on the field would be our defense. That’s what sets us apart from the other teams. On and off the field, the NSU men’s rugby club is known for our good sportsmanship and for remaining a dry club. We encourage our members to help us break that social norm,” McAuthur-Welsh Hall Director, Salesi Mounga, said.

The women’s rugby club will be playing on Oct. 2 with Lincoln City here in Aberdeen. Come out and show your support for the rugby teams.

If you are interested in rugby and would like to try it, the teams practice on Monday-Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. out at K.O. Lee Field. You can also contact Nicole Huber at 605-770-8502 or Peni Mounga at Jerde Hall.
