Wolves record 5th shut out

Wolves 2 - Missouri-Rolla 1

The Wolves traveled Missouri to play games against Missouri-Rolla and Northwest Missouri State. The first game against Missouri-Rolla took two overtimes to complete as the Wolves (4-1) defeated Missouri Rolla(2-2) 2-1.

The first goal of the game was scored by UMR as the shot was deflected by sophomore Theresa Alexander, Cooper City, Fla. into the crossbar, off her head, and into the goal. Sophomore Liz Malastesta, Cheyenne, Wyo., scored the only regulation goal for the Wolves. The winning came as a UMR player tried to deflect a pass from the center of the field but knocked it into their own goal.

Wolves 2 - NW Missouri State 1

The Wolves (5-1) won their second game of the weekend as they defeated the host of the tournament Northwest Missouri State (1-5) 2-1 in overtime.

The Wolves got down early but came back to tie the game at one with a goal by freshman Brittany McCain, Phoenix , Ariz. Regulation would not be enough time for the team as they needed overtime for the second straight day to defeat their opponent. Sophomore Melissa Gamble, Calgary, Alberta, Canada had the game winner on an assist from Malatesta.

North Dakota 1 - Wolves 0

Although Jerde Field saw a great defensive contest, the Wolves (5-2) come up short as UND (5-1-1) defeated them 1-0. UND scored the only goal of the contest early in the second period; that is all they would need to seal the victory. UND was able to hold of a Wolves push in the final three minutes of the game to get the win.

Even though they lost, the Wolves had a great game defensively out of goalie Alexander who stopped 11 Fighting Sioux shots. "We played a great game, they just got lucky in a defensive game,” Alexander said after the game.

USD 2 - Wolves 1

The Wolves (5-3) lose their second game in a row as they lost to USD (7-2) 2-1 in Vermillion. That loss was the first on the road for the Wolves.

No goals were scored in the first half, but USD where first on the board in the second half. Gamble got the only goal for the Wolves at the 64:40 mark. The game winner game at 77:35 mark to put the Wolves down 2-1.

The intensity was high in the second half as three yellow cards were issued. Two of them going to Wolves. A total of 18 fouls were called in the game. USD had a total of 22 shots compared to the Wolves nine.

Wolves 7 - Si Tanka 0

The Wolves (6-3) recorded another shut out on the season as they defeated Si Tanka (Huron) (2-4-1) 7-0. The Wolves got a pair of goals from senior Janelle Solarske, Grand Forks, N.D., and junior Suanne Lampert, Golden, Colo., in a game that saw the Wolves out shoot their opponent 37-1.

Ten minutes into the game, the Wolves began the scoring fest as Gamble hit her seventh goal of the season. Freshman Kristen Kitto, Aberdeen netted her first career goal and Strychum netted her sixth of the season. Freshman Goalie Heidi Brix, Thorton, Colo., got her first career shut out in her first start as a Wolf.

Wolves 6 - Mayville State 0

The Wolves (7-3) netted six goals in the first half to defeat Mayville State (1-7) 6-0 . The win recorded the Wolves’ fifth shutout of the season.

The Wolves’ defense made it easy for goal keepers Brix and Alexander. Mayville State did not get a shot on goal in the contest, while the Wolves had 18 shots on goal. The Wolves were led by McCain who netted two goals in the contest. With this 6-0 win, the Wolves have now outscored their opponents 34-7 on the season.

The Wolves are next in action on Sept 29 at 3:00pm in Jamestown.
