What We Do

What We Do:

NSU Parking Office

The NSU Parking office is staffed by student employees during the academic school year. The Parking Office and Ticketing hours are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Ticketing generally begins two weeks after the first day of school until finals week, each semester. There is one appeals committee meeting held before or during finals week each semester. This committee is composed of faculty, career service, administration, student body, and the Facilities Management Parking staff members. Comments and suggestions to the committee are encouraged. To contact the Parking Office you can call 626-2561, go to the Physical Plant Room 216, or email the office at nsupark@northern.edu.

Students, faculty, and staff need to know:

  • The fine for no permit displayed is $25.00 and all other violations are $10.00.
  • Parking permits must be purchased and displayed in the rear view mirror of the student's vehicle with the permit number and year clearly facing the windshield in order to park in campus parking lots. If and only if the vehicle does not have a rearview mirror, the permit can be displayed on the driver's side dash with the permit number and year facing the windshield. All other locations are considered improper and a $10.00 fine will be imposed. Failure to display permit will result in a $25.00 ticket, but can be amended to a $10.00 fine with proof of permit purchase. Parking on Washington Street, State Street, and/or Fifteenth Avenue is regulated by the City of Aberdeen and you do not need a permit to do so. However, you must be conscious of the street sweeping and/or snow removal schedule.
  • All students, faculty, and staff are allotted one warning within the current school year. The ticket will be determined a warning upon returning it to the Parking Office depending on if it is the first ticket, no matter what violation, issued to the vehicle/person.
  • Temporary permits are available to all students who have purchased a permit and are valid for up to one week from date of issuance. These permits can also be picked up for visitors to campus who are not students.
  • Motorcycles can park without a permit in the motorcycle pad south of the Library. If a motorcycle is parked anywhere else on campus without a permit, a $25.00 fine will be imposed.
  • Parking permits will not be replaced or refunded for any reason such as theft, damage, or loss.
  • Night class students do not need to purchase a parking permit unless they wish to park on campus during ticketing hours.
  • During events held on campus such as state tournaments and JFAC Arts events there will be no ticketing for No Parking Permit Displayed. However, tickets may be given to those with permits that are not parking in designated parking areas. We are sorry for the lack of parking spaces during these events.
  • All fines will be paid at the Finance Office, Administration building Room 202.

Billing and Appeals Process

After receiving a parking ticket, you have five school days to return the ticket to the Parking Office and/or appeal the ticket. In order to appeal the ticket, come to the Parking Office and pick up an appeals form. If you do not appeal the ticket within the five days after the ticket is issued, you will be billed or assessed a warning depending on the circumstances. Once a bill has been generated, the ticket cannot be appealed.

Bills for tickets will be mailed to your campus mailbox unless you do not have one. If you do not have a campus address, you will receive the bill at your home address. If you do not pay the fines by the end of the semester, you will not be allowed to enroll in future classes, receive transcripts, or if an employee, you will be reported to your supervisor.
