The mission of Northern Galleries is to maintain attractive and convenient venues in which the students, faculty, and staff of Northern State University (NSU), as well as the general public can view quality works of art. In conjunction with this goal, Northern Galleries both seeks out professional artists to exhibit at NSU and provides programs that encourage on- and off-campus students to display their art. Although Northern Galleries mostly works with and supports living and therefore contemporary artists, the range of subject matter, styles, and media that is exhibited is wide and varied. In brief, it is Northern Galleries' objective to offer the viewing public many types of visual experiences and, whenever possible, to give them opportunities to meet, talk with, and sometimes even work next to highly skilled artists.
Some of the more important specific aspects of our mission include the following:
Maintaining and continuing an active schedule of art events in four galleries (the Isaac Lincoln Gallery, the President’s Gallery, the Student Center Gallery, and the Johnson Fine Arts Center Gallery).
Publicizing opportunities for professional artists to exhibit at NSU.
Making clerical (including scheduling) and physical arrangements for professional and student artists to display their art in one of our four galleries.
Publishing both a poster schedule of the academic year’s art events and postcards for individual shows.
Organizing professional artist receptions and gallery talks.
Assisting the NSU Art Department with its annual high school art workshop.
Conducting curatorial and cataloging work for a permanent collection of two-dimensional art.
Giving students an opportunity to learn about the operation of a gallery through a work-study program.
Through these general and specific goals, Northern Galleries seeks to maintain a schedule and a set of galleries that contribute to the maintenance and growth of the visual arts on the campus of Northern State University as well as the surrounding region.
