Every gallery at Northern State University is unique. What makes the President's Gallery distinctive is its proximity to the Art Department and the fact that it is located in a high-traffic area of the campus. The Art Department was once housed in another building called Dacotah Hall (built in 1961). However, when the University decided to place the registration office, admissions, and the student academic resources center in one building, the Art Department was moved from Dacotah Hall to Spafford Hall (built in 1927). Because the President’s Gallery was already located in Spafford Hall prior to this move, what resulted was a more unified teaching and learning arts facility. Spafford Hall also houses some of the University’s primary administrative offices, which is one reason why so many people view the President’s Gallery. In addition, Spafford Hall and the President’s Gallery are between two other administrative-classroom buildings, resulting in even more traffic. This, together with the wonderful way the gallery is kept up, makes for a very pleasing setting in which to view works of art.
