Every gallery at Northern State University is unique. What makes the Student Center Gallery distinctive is its fresh and contemporary setting. The gallery is located at the very heart of a building that is the main focus of the campus’ non-academic life. Built in 1958 and completely remodeled in 1998, the Student Center is a very modern, active building. Students, faculty, and staff alike make use of it to hold social affairs, dine, purchase books and other materials, obtain mail, attend student governance and other types of meetings, take advantage of medical and disabilities services, and so on. The vital and vibrant nature of the Student Center itself spills over into and is a part of the Student Center Gallery. For example, though not exclusively a gallery for student art, the Student Center Gallery does focus on the creations of NSU art majors and art produced by high school students. However, many professional artists and several members of the NSU Art Department faculty also enjoy exhibiting in the Student Center Gallery because of its attractive and lively setting. In addition, there is a very comfortable lounge just in front of the gallery’s showcases, making it a comfortable environment in which to talk about art or simply to have quality works of art there as a backdrop for other kinds of conversations.
