Master of Science in Education Guidance and Counseling
The counselor education program at Northern State University is a 48-58 semester hour program, depending on whether the student chooses the paper option, or non-paper option. This program prepares students for a career in counseling, guidance and other helping professions. The program leads to a master of science degree in education and school or community certification. Students are encouraged to develop an individual counseling style; no single educational or counseling approach is imposed.
One year of successful work experience is preferred for admission to candidacy in this program.

IV. Specialization Orientation: 16 credits (21 for Licensure)
School: Students preparing for school counseling must take CGPS 710, Intro to School Counseling (2), CGPS 711, Counseling Child & Adolescents (3), CGPS 795, Practicum: School (3), and CGPS 794, Internship: School (6), CGPS 768, Family Counseling (2), and five hours of elective courses (7-8 for option C) approved by the committee. In order to be certified in SD, students must take INED 411 SD Indian Studies, and EDFN 475 Human Development.
Agency: Students preparing for other community agencies must take CGPS 763, Applications of Counseling Techniques (3), CGPS 795, Practicum: Agency (3), and CGPS 794, Internship: Agency (6). In addition, it is strongly recommended that they include CGPS 737, Psychopathology & Diagnosis (3), CGPS 768, Family Counseling (2), CGPS 739, Psychopharmacology (2), and CGPS 740, Case Management (2), in their specialization course work and 2.3 hours of electives for option C as approved by the committee.
