Computer Troubleshooting:
Power
off your computer and unplug it from the
power outlet. Typically the cover of a
desktop will protect the major components of
the computer. For any
part that was hit by the spill, wipe off
with a damp cloth and blow dry on low heat.
If liquid got into the computer and you know how to
open it, gently wipe
off spill with a damp cloth and let it dry.
You may also blow dry it with low heat.
If the you spilled liquid on your keyboard, tip it to its side and let the liquid flow
out and then wipe down with a damp cloth.
If you have a laptop, disconnect the power and remove the battery.
Wipe off liquid with a damp cloth and let
dry. You can try using compressed/canned air
to blow out the liquid. Because of the
design of a laptop, spilling liquid can
damage the components. After the spill has
dried, tried to power on the laptop. If the
laptop is damaged, contact the Help Desk at
626-2283 for help. Please remember that unless you
have an accident warranty for events other
than a computer malfunction, manufacturers
will not cover the damage.
-
Scan for
spyware, using 2-3 different programs.
Suggested programs include
Ad-aware,
Spybot,
Windows Defender,
or
Trendmicro.
Defragment
your hard drive
Clear
temporary Internet files under Browsing History in Internet Explorer or
clear
private data in Mozilla Firefox
Turn on pop-up blockers
in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. If that does not resolve the problem, your system may be infected by spy-ware.
Click here for instructions on how to scan for spyware.
Your anti-virus software should allow you to choose to remove the virus. Once you have, restart your
pc, log in and update your antivirus program. Then run a complete virus scan of the hard drive.
