What to expect after downloading Windows XP Service Pack 2
Service Pack 2 (SP2) increases users level of security protection. There are a number of things that you, an NSU student, need to be aware of.
Java
Windows XP no longer comes standard with the Java plug-in installed. This plug-in is essential for using Desire2Learn and must be installed on your computer.
Windows Firewall
By default, SP2 enables your Windows firewall. To view more information on Windows firewall go to http://www.northern.edu/help/network/cca/windowsfirewall.htm
Pop-up Blocker
SP2 includes a built-in pop-up blocker. Sometimes, the pop-up blocker will block pop-ups that you need, including pop-ups in Desire2Learn.
- Open Internet Explorer and go to Tools >> Pop-up Blocker >> Pop-up Blocker Settings
- Add the Desire2Learn site so that pop-ups will be allowed.
- You will need to add any other sites that you wish to allow pop-ups from.
- It is NOT a good idea to turn off pop-up blocker.
Information Bar
The Information Bar appears below the Internet Explorer toolbar and contains a line of text that appears when a potential problem is detected such as blocked ActiveX installs, pop-ups, downloads and active content. The Information Bar, however, may block content that is necessary to complete online tasks.
The information bar will provide instructions on how to get the Web pages they trust working again. You may also right-click over the information bar for more options.
