NSU has established a protocol for publishing web pages. The official NSU site for students is housed on http://students.northern.edu. Individuals can use FTP to transfer their web pages to the Internet.
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. Simply put, individuals can transfer all pages and files related to their web site at one time. Follow the instructions to create, edit and/or transfer a web site at NSU.
Setting up an account for your Website
- Contact the NSU Help Desk at 626-2283
- The help desk will arrange for an initial account to be set up for you.
- Most academic pages are already established but you will need to contact the help desk to get editing rights to those pages if this has not already been done.
- If you need a personal page or new academic page, a new folder will be created for you. Generally the new site will resemble this: http://students.northern.edu/email _username
- Please also ensure you read the NSU Acceptable Use Policy.
Create your Web Pages
Transfer (Publish) your web pages
- You can use a variety of software tools to create web pages including Microsoft FrontPage, Netscape Composer or Macromedia Dreamweaver.
- Tutorials on Microsoft FrontPage, Netscape Composer and Macromedia Dreamweaver are accessible at: http://www.northern.edu/help/resources/
- You can create a web page with raw HTML scripting.
- Once you are satisfied with your web pages, you are ready to transfer them to your folder on students.northern.edu.
- Open Internet Explorer (Netscape will not work for this) and type:
- ftp://students.northern.edu/
- When prompted, enter nsu\ your email username and password.
login: nsu\jonest
password: *********
- Copy your web site and paste it into the white area that now appears in Internet Explorer. This is your folder on the server.
- You can now access your pages by typing in http://students.northern.edu/YourUsername
*Note: If you have a page titled "index", this page will open automatically when you enter the above address. If you have your site in a folder or have named the first page something other than index, you will need to include the folder name and page title in your address. For example, if Tom Jones created a web site in a folder called engl101 and he titled the first page "welcome.htm", his address would be: http://students.northern.edu/jonest/engl101/welcome.htm
Edit your pages - You can edit pages directly on the web server or edit the page on your hard drive and transfer the page.
- To edit from the web server when using FrontPage:
- Be sure to let the help desk know that you need the FrontPage extensions enabled on your Web site.
- Open your page in Internet Explorer.
- Select the Edit with FrontPage button on the menu bar or select the File drop down menu and select Edit with Microsoft Office FrontPage (assuming that FrontPage is set as your default editor).
- You will be prompted to enter your username and password.
- Make any changes and select the Save button.
- Select refresh on your browser page to see the changes.
- To edit a page on your hard drive:
- Open the local file (the version saved on your computer) in the editor of your choice.
- Make the desired changes and save the page locally.
- Open your web folder using the ftp protocol outlined above.
- Copy and paste your page and any files associated to the ftp folder.
- You are overwriting a page already in the folder so you will be prompted to verify that you want to overwrite the file(s).
Publishing with FrontPage
- You can publish your web pages directly from FrontPage but there are two different methods to use depending on the format of your username.
