An electronic portfolio is a tool that can be used for
learning and assessment. Students should include evidence
from a variety of resources that indicates what they have
learned in their courses. Barton and Collins (1997) have
identified four types of evidence that can be included in an
electronic portfolio.
- Artifacts: documents created during normal
coursework
- Reproductions: documents created outside of normal
coursework
- Attestations: documents created about a student's
academic progress
- Productions: documents prepared specifically for the
portfolio
- Goal statements: student's interpretation of the
purpose of the portfolio
- Reflective statements: student's written
comments on their documentations
- Captions: statements attached to each individual
piece of evidence indicating what it is, why it is
evidence, and what type of evidence it is

Each student at NSU is required to complete
an Electronic Portfolio upon completion of his or her
degree. Most portfolio's will be developed during the major
capstone course. A generic portion is integrated into the
student's articles of evidence. Please work with your
faculty advisor as to what types of evidence to include in
your electronic portfolio. If you need assistance with the
creation of the portfolio, contact Instructional Design staff or the NSU
Help Desk.
