Two days ago we went to Thames and visited the gold mine,
which is dug in a softer rock than in Lead, so it was interesting
to see the differences. And the historical village and stayed the
night in Rotorua. Yesterday we went to the thermal reserve
and the buried village. The evening was consumed my the Maori Hangi,
or traditional feast. Would you believe that the Lady Knoxs Geyser eruptions
are man induced?

Joanna and Janne at the Thames Gold Mine.

There are some cool flowers down here. This one's commonly
known as a red hot poker.

With her "torch" in hand, Joanna gets ready to head into the
mining tunnels. I think she might have gotten some of that yellow rock
on her coat...

Janne and the guide at the shaking beds.

Mercury was added to the water in this machine so the gold
and silver would form an amalgamate. The man running this machine would
reach into the contaminated water with his bare hands!

These brown cylinders are the stamps which crush small rocks.

The countryside just out of Thames.

Wow...

|
While eating lunch at the Landing (Karikari), we spotted a
really cool quilt and just had to take a picture (real tourists, I know...).

Those are some BIG boots...

An old Maori village in Rotorua. The sulfuric gas has eaten
away at some of the bricks, so watch your step!

|
Herb's Place, bar and grill. We never really ate here, but
we had to get a shot as a tribute to the Herbs.

Lewishams Restaurant. Janne's first glass of New Zealand vintage.

They have some odd birds here at lake Tarawera...

Ever seen a black swan before?

Joanna at the Thermal Wonderland in Wai-O-Tapu. We walked through
the entire park and even saw the Lady Knoxs Geyser.
|
|
On cold days, you can really see the steam rising off the thermal
pools. In some areas, the clouds even covered the walkways like a dense
fog, but we were glad for some of the heat!
