STUDY ABROAD
ACIS
All students are urged to visit the office
maintained by the Academic Center for
International Study located in SEY 320 where
brochures and other informational material is
collected and filed. This office also has a
connection to the internet so that students can
investigate study abroad programs on line.
Université d’Orléans
Northern Students are eligible to study at the
Université d’Orléans under very favorable
conditions thanks to a long-established
agreement between this institution and the
University of South Dakota. Clicking here will
take you to the USD departmental web site where
you can learn more. Since the French Studies
program is identical at all three collaborating
institutions (NSU, USD, and SDSU), transferring
credits is practically effortless.
Université de Picardie Jules Verne
Located in the Somme region north of Paris and
home to NSU's assistante during the 1999-2000
academic year, Mlle Amina Elkhatabi, the
Université de Picardie Jules Verne is a modern,
comprehensive public university. NSU is
presently negotiating an exchange agreement
whereby students can pay the tuition and fees of
their home institutions but receive instruction
and services at the partner institution.
Northern students who apply for the
Assistantship program through the French
Consulate/Ministry of Education can be placed in
secondary schools in and around the city of
Amiens so that they can pursue classes at UPJV
at the same time.
Université de Sherbrooke
This French-speaking university in the Canadian
province of Québec has recently joined the
consortium of universities linked under the
National Student Exchange. In essence, NSU
students pay NSU tuition and fees but receive
instruction and services at the Université de
Sherbrooke. The Université de Sherbrooke hosts a
great number of students from around the world
who want a North American higher educational
experience but in a completely French-speaking
environment. This option is for advanced
students of French. Further information can be
obtained from Ms Tracy Russman at NSU Enrollment
Services.
Spring Break Study Tours
The French Ministry of Education's Language Assistantship Program Each year the French Ministry of Education places several hundred American undergraduate and graduate students in paid positions as assistants to the English faculty at French junior and senior high schools. Successful applicants receive about $930 per month and full health and social security benefits in exchange for 12 hours of service per week. Assistants are free to pursue classes at universities or language institutes or to seek additional employment in some other capacity. In the past, only French majors were eligible, but in a major change of policy, the Ministry is now welcoming applications from students of all kinds of major fields of study, especially Education. They need only "sufficient" French language skills (still, at least two years of study).
