Web 2.0 is different in a few ways than Web 1.0 (or the regular web):
  • Social - easy to share information with others and add comments to news, blogs, etc.
  • Collaboration - easy to work on projects without emailing documents back and forth
  • Storing data online - store resources, documents, bookmarks, etc online for free
  • Targeted advertising - ads based on content, searches, subject, etc. on sites
  • Wikipedia definition and critical views from First Monday
RSS - rich site summary or real simple syndication, is “a technology that allows web users to receive (ongoing, constantly updated) information collected from many sources through a simple reader.”*

A student can subscribe to many newspapers and receive new editions every morning
at his door.  Similar to subscribing to print newspapers, you can subscribe to online
newspapers, blogs, etc. via an RSS reader.  RSS subscriptions are called feeds
Thus, you log on to your RSS reader and see all the updates to your subscriptions (feeds).

Podcasts - A web-based audio program you may listen on your computer or MP3 player (e.g. iPod).  Many radio networks (e.g. NPR) turn their radio programs into podcasts, plus some radio and news networks create programs just for podcasting.  Many individuals create podcasts, which are similar to blogs, but done with audio.  To take the podcast with you, you will need one of the free programs, podcatcher, listed below.

Vlogs - an abbreviation for Video log, a vlog is a web-based diary/log usually on a particular
subject/theme. Most vlogs are created/maintained by individuals, but some are for organizations
or businesses.  Vlogging involves more technical aspects, but ask NET Services for help.  The video is on podcasting, but replace audio with video.  Most podcatchers (see above) also "catch" vlogs.
