The American Presidency

The historical section features hundreds of articles from Grolier Online, Scholastic’s comprehensive collection of encyclopedias and other reference resources, plus presidential speeches, photographs, audio and video clips, and other items associated with the presidency and its role within the framework of the federal government." 

The Avalon Project (Yale Law School)
Project to make available digital documents relevant to the fields of Law, History, Economics, Politics, Diplomacy, and Government. 

CIA World Factbook
Information about the geography, demographics, economics, politics and military power of countries around the world. Includes helpful appendices, such as international organizations and groups. 

Constitution of the United States
Browsable version of the Consitution that includes analysis and interpretation of the Constitution, annotations of cases decided by the Supreme Court of the United States, and supplements to the 1992 Edition. 

Miller Center-Scripps Library and Multimedia Archive (University of Virginia)
Features audio files of Presidential speeches, secretly recorded White House conversations, and oral histories regarding the American presidency.

Core Documents of the U.S. Democracy
Core group of current and historical government publications. Includes cornerstone documents like the Bill of Rights, presidential inauguration speeches, Congressional bills, Supreme Court decisions, regulations, and economic data.

Democracy in America (University of Virginia)
Online edition of Alexis de Tocqueville's Democracy in America. The site features a virtual tour following Tocqueville's route in 1831 that includes his itinerary, a map of his route, and a travel narrative with quotations from Tocqueville's letters and writings. 

Documents in the News (University of Michigan)
Good source for current events research. From the site: "Documents in the News identifies issues about government making news headlines and Web sources with additional information." 

Douglass: Archives of American Public Address (Northwestern University)
An electronic archive of American oratory and related documents. Speeches may be browsed by date, title, speaker, and by issue. The Resource Desk and Featured sections of the site provide links to Web resources on featured themes. Another section of the site provides online access to An Outline of American History (USIO). 

Guide to Philosophy on the Internet
Comprehensive, peer-reviewed resource of collected links to scholarly works, Web sites, and texts of philosophers that are online. Updates to the guide ceased in February 2003, so be aware that some links may be outdated. 

The Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics, and Public Policy (Harvard University)
Site features research and discussion papers, online books on relevant issues, and a link to the Harvard International Journal of Press/Politics

The Making of America Project (Cornell University)
The Making of America Project (University of Michigan)
Digital library of primary sources in American social history from the Antebellum period through Reconstruction; a joint effort of the University of Michigan and Cornell University. According to the site, the Michigan collection focuses on education, psychology, American history, sociology, religion, and science and technology, while Cornell focuses mainly on digitizing general interest periodicals. 

An Outline of American Government
An online textbook published by the U.S. Information Agency, with chapters beginning with the Constitution and concluding with citizens' groups and lobbies. 

Public Papers of the Presidents of the United States
Published by the Office of the Federal Register (OFR) as the official publication of United States Presidents' public writings, addresses, and remarks. 

The Record of American Democracy: 1984-1990 (Harvard University)
From the site: "...data on the site include election returns, socioeconomic summaries, and demographic measures of the American public at unusually low levels of geographic aggregation." The project, funded by the National Science Foundation, covers every state in the country from 1984 through 1990 (including some off-year elections). 

Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy
Designed as a dynamic reference work with more than 500 entries in 35 subject areas, including philosophy of science, aesthetics, history of ideas, feminism, ethics (theoretical and applied), social and political philosophy, and logic. 

ThisNation.com
From the site: "...a repository of basic information, resources and historical documents related to American Government and Politics. This site is the home of one of the first exclusively online American government & politics textbooks." In addition, the site contains learning tools designed separately for citizens, students, and teachers.
