Basic rules to remember
- Library users MUST show a valid ID card to check out materials.
- Your card MUST be activated at the circulation desk to use.
- Report a lost ID to the library immediately. If you fail to report the loss, you will be responsible for items checked out on your card.

Borrowing & Fees
You must possess a valid NSU ID or other active SD library card and be over 18 to borrow materials from Williams Library.
Undergraduates
Books, Videos, non-music CDs, AV Materials, & Sheet Music: Two-week checkout
Fines: $2.50 every two weeks (billed cost of item at 60 days)
Bound Periodicals: Three-day checkout
Fines: $1.00 per day (billed cost of item at 30 days)
Returnable Interlibrary Loans: Due dates vary
Fines: $1.00 per day
Graduate Students, Adjunct Faculty and University Staff
Books, Videos, non-music CDs, AV Materials, & Sheet Music: End of current semester
Fines:$2.50 every two weeks (billed cost of item at 60 days)
Bound Periodicals: Three-day checkout
Fines: $1 per day (billed cost of item at 30 days)
Returnable Interlibrary Loans: Due dates vary
Fines: $1 per day
Faculty
Books, Videos, non-music CDs, AV Materials, & Sheet Music: Last day of spring classes
Fines:$2.50 every two weeks (billed cost of item at 60 days)
Bound Periodicals & Music CDs or LPS: Three-day checkout
Fines: $1 per day (billed cost of item at 30 days)
Returnable Interlibrary Loans: Due dates vary
Fines: $1 per day
NSU Guests/External Borrowers (those using a library card not issued by NSU)
Books, Videos, non-music CDs, AV Materials, & Sheet Music: Two week checkout, loan limit of ten (10) items
Fines:$2.50 every two weeks (billed cost of item at 60 days)
Bound Periodicals: No checkout
The following items may not leave the library:
- Archives material
- Microforms
- Individual issues of magazines, journals, and newspapers
- Reference books
Music CDs & LPs
Reserves
Items held behind the Circulation are usually intended for use by students in a specific class or section.
- An NSU ID is required to use these items
- You may use 2 items at a time
Items are not to leave the library, unless specified by the professor
Fines: $2/day (billed cost of the item at 7 days)
Remember - you must have your NSU ID card with you to check out Reserve items.
Holds
Recalled Items
If you receive a recall notice, it means the item you are using has been requested by another patron.
Renewals
- Overdue items cannot be renewed.
- Books may be renewed once.
- Books which another patron has requested (placed a hold on) cannot be renewed.
- Bound periodicals cannot be renewed.
- Renewals can be done over the phone - call 626-2645.
- Renewals can be done online in the library catalog. See below for directions.
How to renew
- Follow the link to the My Library Card
- Log in. (Enter your barcode number - on back of your NSU ID - and password)
- Select "Northern State University" from the Library dropdown menu
- Under the Activities heading click the Loans link
- Click "Renew All" to renew everything, or click the underlined number at the far left of each item to renew individual items
