Course Objectives:

The primary purposes of the course are to develop problem-solving

skills that require a logical structure and to provide the essential algebraic and trigonometric background for work in other fields or courses.The students also work on 'real life' problems

that use trigonometry.

The students will also learn to use graphing calculators.

Textbook: Trigonometry, Michael Sullivan

Topics Covered:

Functions and their Graphs; Trigonometric Functions; Analytic Geometry; Applications of Trigonometric Functions; Polar Coordinates, and vectors. (Chapters 1-4,5.1,5.2,5.5).

Class Procedure:

Course activities will include lecture and discussion, study of text, quizzes, homework, class participation, use of graphing calculators and computers, 3 chapter tests, and a comprehensive final. All tests will have multiple choice questions.

Final Examination:

The final examination shall be a comprehensive examination. It is scheduled for Friday, May 11, 2001 from 12pm to 2 pm in MJ-103.

Course grades are based on the total points obtained with letter grades assigned according to the following percentages:

A - 90% to 100%B - 80% to 89.9%

C - 65% to 79.9%D - 55% to 64.9%F - below 55%

Written Reports

(DUE April 18, 2001)

Note: Discuss the content and use of any two trigonometrywebsites.

Each report should be typed and at least two page long.

Attendance:

Attending class is an important component to doing well in this class.Mathematics is a subject which builds on concepts covered each day in class.Hence, it is important to be diligent in attending class so that one does not fall behind.There will also be announcements made in class regarding exams, homework, and quizzes which should not be missed.If it is necessary to miss class due to scheduled university events, family emergencies, etc., you should contact me beforehand in order to make special arrangements for tests and quizzes.
