PERSONAL PROFILE

I was born and raised in Amritsar, India in the state of Panjab.   Amritsar (means pool of nectar) is the site of the sacred "pool of immortality" and Golden Temple, the chief Sikh shrine.  It  was founded in 1577 by Ram Das, the fourth guru of the Sikhs.   The Jallianwalla Bagh massacre took place in Amritsar on April 13, 1919.   The British troops fired on a political gathering and  killed 379 and wounded 1200.    It is an important commercial and manufacturing center and home to a university, several arts and technical colleges, a medical and a dental college.  After my M.A. ( Panjab University) in mathematics, my first job was as a Senior Research Assistant at the Irrigation, Power and Land Reclamation Research Institute, Amritsar.    I did not care for the 8-5 job even though it was a very challenging job with research in many practical applications of mathematics to hydrology and dams.   So I decided to go for a Ph.d. degree.   In those days most of the Indian mathematicians were in the U.S.  and so I had to come to the U.S. to get in the Ph.d. program of  the University of Colorado, Boulder.    I spent a year at the Universite de Paris, with a fellowship from the University of Colorado, to finish my Ph.d. thesis.

I have taught  in India, Colombia,U.S.A., and Venezuela.    My biography is listed in the current editions of Who's Who in America (millenium edition),Wh'o Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who among America's Teachers and Who's Who in the Midwest.   I am the faculty advisor for the national mathematics honor society Kappa Mu Epsilon.   My hobbies are international travel, reading, gardening, gourmet cooking and tennis.
 
 

 Cricket is the most important sport of India.   It is played with a bat and a ball with 11 players on each team.   It is a very leisurely game with tea and lunch breaks.   A test match between two countries lasts at least 5 days or a minimum of 30 playing hours.   Commercial cricket matches are played in one day.    Recently the TV show Fox Files had a segment on the popularity of cricket in the inner cities of the U.S.A.

Research Interests:

Commutative Algebra, Algebraic Number Theory, Function Fields, Homological Algebra.   I am currently interested in the use of technology in collegiate and secondary mathematics.    I have conducted five workshops (1990-1994) on the use of technology in mathematics for middle and high school teachers.

I discovered a large class of euclidean rings, for my Ph. d. thesis, whose existence was not suspected.    I have published more than 20  research papers in international mathematics journals and  reviewed more than 80 research papers for the Mathematical Reviews.   I have presented papers at national and international conferences in Colombia, Mexico, U.S.A., and Venezuela.   I have also directed 13 Bachelor and Master's theses.
