    a) entered into a long period of stagnation

III) Assyrians (1000-612 b.c.)
*Lived in Northern Mesopotania, very open to foriegn invasion
 A) Assyrian neighbors ( Horites, Mittani, Hittites)
  1) Assyrians were invaded often
    i) they had to spend a large amount of money on defense
    ii) Developed a warlike civiliaztion
    iii) Around 1000 b.c. they start to dominate Mesopotania
 B) result of constant warfare
  1) were able to adopt many achievments of previous civilizations
    i) advanced trading practices
  2) technology
    i) adopted technology to further military efforts (siege machines, weapons)
  3) science
    i) astronomy
     a) could predict eclipses
     b) assyrians understood that eclipses were normal while their enemies were in panic
     c) allowed assyrains to easily defeat others
  4) Trade
    i) improved upon previous trading practices
  5) Use of Terror (more cruel = more power)
    i) disrespected the deads wish to be buried
    ii) mutilated enemies whether they were dead or alive
    iii) once burned 3000 people
    iv) very cruel
    v) had a huge impact on ethical guidance
    vi) used terror to stop rebellions- did not work
      a) the more cruel they treated people the more uprisings came about
    vii) begin to treat each other with cruelty

    i) very cruel laws that many times involved mutilations
    ii) used punishments of foriegners on thier own people
    iii) women were not important to the military - thus have no rights or status
 C) Collapse of Assyria
    1) they were hated throughout Mesopotania
      i) a coalition was formed to defeat the Assyrians, Chaldaeans were apart of this
      ii) Assyrians were weakend then defeated by the people they ruled due to thier cruelty
      iii) everything is destroyed

IV) Chaldaeans (Neo Babylonians) (612-536 b.c.)
 A) Nebuchanezzer
   1) was a great general and defeated the Assyrians
   2) becomes the king
   3) Able to aquire a large empire, slightly smaller than the Assyrians
 B)Restoring Babylon to greatness
   1) restores Babylon as the capital
  2) Restores the religion of Babylon (Marduk)
  3) Builds hanging gardens to promote beauty, and emotional fulfillment
  4) re-aquires all the technology of previous civilizations
  5) provides Physical security, ethical guidance and emotional fulfillment for a short time
 C) Obstacles to restoration
   1) Pessimism of people
     i) people did not belive in the old religion
     ii) they begin to look at Astral Religion
      a) worshiped the order of the stars
      b) begin to worship stars and believe that the events on earth are foretold by the stars
      c) people start to blame the stars for all of thier personal shortcomings
      d) personal responsibility goes out the window
        1) cheating on spouse increases
        2) king has a party while foriegn invaders are at the front gate
        3) invaders are able to siege the city
        4) inhabitants of the city are short on food so they must kill those who cannot fight
        5) women cant fight so only 1 out of 10 are kept alive
