I.) New Kingdom Egypt (1570-1000 b.c.)
A.) Ahmose
 1.) leader of Egypt 1570 - 1545 b.c.
 2.) united Egypt against Hyksos
 3.) drove Hyksos out of Egypt because they adopted the Hyksos weaponry
B.) Egypt after the Hyksos
 1.) Egypt able to remember its history and able to retain the advances they had   accomplished before the Hyksos.
 2.) New additions to Egypt
  i.) Strong Army
   a.) adopted the weapons of the Hyksos
   b.) developed a strong army to make sure that Egypt was never invaded     again.
   c.) Egyptians begin to use an offensive defense
   d.) expand empire South, North, and East
  ii.) spoils of war add to the wealth of Egypt
 3.) Problems of New Kingdom
  i.) disagreements over policy creates instability

[Marmorstein note: usually Hatchepsut, but spelled other ways too.  Hatchepsut took over after her husband's death and apparently was a fine ruler.  But the army didn't like her reliance on diplomacy rather than military expansion.  See the Wikipedia article on Hatshepsut]
    1.) Expanded empire meant expading trading opportunities and  a wealthy society
    2.) army creates instability due to anger with  Hatshepsut, supports Thutmose III over his step-mother
  ii.) Spoils of war
   a.) Egypt acquires slaves through warfare
    1.) slaves = potential slave rebellion
     i.) Egyptians had to keep a tight leash stop rebellions
    2.) Cruel treatment of slaves
     i.) killing of male babies to weaken slave revolts
    3.) When the Egyptians treat the slaves poorly the lines of ethics are blurred and Egyptians begin to treat each other poorly
   * Slaves = breakdown in ethical guidance
  iii.) Religion
   a.) Kingdom of Osiris
    1.) Priest begin to sell the "Book of the Dead"
     i.) free pass into the after life [See the Declaration of Innocence from Budge's translation of the Book of the Dead]
     ii.) People don't have to retain moral standards anymore  because they can buy entrance into the afterlife
     iii.) People view priests and gods with less respect
        iv.) breakdown in ethical guidance
  iv.) Harsher laws and penalties come about due to ethical breakdown
   a.) Rulers enact tougher laws and punishment the worse the society     becomes.
   b.) Harsher laws continue the ethical guidance breakdown creating a snow     ball effect.
   c.) Examples
    1.) mutilations for a crime committed.
C.) End of the New Kingdom
 1.) The new kingdom falls but not too hard
  i.) Egyptians discover the secret to a happy life
   a.) love-based marriage remains stable during through the breakdown in ethics and enables Egyptian cilization to avoid total  destruction.
