people didn't like Zwingli due to this

get rid of him by proclaiming him a heretic

iii) allows priests to marry

5) Zwingli made himself enemies
i) swiss rich didn't want teachings
to spread
ii) rich create a war to kill Zwingli
6) Swiss go to war with each other and Zwingli is
killed
C) Calvin
1) 1st class education, read the bible
2) wrote institutions of Christian religion
i) tries to unite the Old Testament
and New Testament - applied them to real life
ii) many people think Calvin has
religion
right
iii) invited to teach in Geneva
3) Teachings spread across Europe then on to
Puritans
who moved to America
4) 5 point Calvinism TULIP
i) Total depravity - all aspects of
humans are corrupt
ii) Unconditional election - God choose
certain people to be saved - no particular reason
iii) Limited Atonement - Those not
chosen
by God will never get into heaven
iv) Irresistible Grace - the chosen
people go to heaven no matter what they do
v) Perseverance of the Saints - nothing
can make you lose your salvation
5) Calvanists are great reformers
i) very surprising that they do anything
at all due to their doctrine
6) main teaching of Calvin is that God is the Boss
i) Do things the way God wants
ii) They are not worried about salvation
- they are worried about making the boss happy
7) results of Calvinism in France
i) many nobles converted to insult the
king
ii) leads to the French wars of Religion
1562-1589
iii) 1572 king of France decides to
make peace with Calvanists through marriage
iv) kings advisors tell the king to
kill all the unarmed nobles that come to the wedding
v) the king massacres nobles and extends
the order to kill all Calvanists

his teachings offended people politically

E) Anabaptists
1) Just wanted to live closely in accordance to
the bible
2) thought baptism was important as an adult - no
infants baptized
3) opponents called them the re-baptists or
Anabaptists
i) penalty for re-baptism = death
ii) many burned at the stake
4) Persecution wiped out 1st generation of leaders
5) 2nd generation made small changes
i) begin taking bible too literally
- burning lips and running around naked
6) Munster was a safe haven for the Anabaptists
i) soon became the Majority of the city
ii) they shared all things in common
iii) thought Munster was the New
Jerusalem
iv) Luthern and Catholics get angry
at the Anabaptists, a war ensues - Lutherns and Catholics Massacre the
town
v) took leaders and tortured them
