III) Hebrew contributions
  A) Tenach (Torah, Neviim, Kituvim) 3 sections of the old testament / Hebrew bible
    1) Law (Deuteronomy) - Torah
      i) Deuteronomy 5    10 commandments
       a) easy for people to remember only 10  rules
       b) still obeyed today, tells us of their longetivity
       c) No penalties listed with laws, unlike Hummrabi and Assyrian laws
         1) told people that this was divine law, with punishment in the afterlife
         2) told people that these were principals to live by, rather than laws
      ii) Shema (Deuteronomy 6-7)
        a) says that there is only one god
         1) was a very new idea during time it was written
         2) first monotheistic idea to prevail through time
        b) love God
         1) most important Hebrew principal
         2) idea of a loving relationship with God
        c) Covenant (Deuteronomy 5)
         1) previous times people could not figure out why gods did things
         2) covenant give the people the feeling that God was working with and for them
   2) Prophets (Isaiah)
     i) Assyrian's becoming dominant power = major political threat
     ii) Agricultural revolution - shift from grain crops to vine and olive crops
      a) poor farmers could not afford costs to start or switch type of crops
      b) poor farmers had to sell land
       1) the gap between the rich and the poor widens
       2) many poor farmers sold into slavery to pay their debts
    iii) Isaiah says rituals do not please God / treating others with respect pleases God
      a) tells the people that treating others good is most important and what he wants
      b) this idea still exists today
      c) Also says that forgiveness gave be granted under any circumstances
        1) was a new idea at the time
    iv) Gives prophecy of hope for the future
      a) gives an idea of a messiah
        1) gives hope for the Hebrew people for a great man to lead them
      b) Isaiah 53 - preview of the crusifixtion of Christ
        1) gives blue print for how things would happen
  3) Writings (Psalms)
    i) psalm 23
      a) influence of this still exists today
    ii) The writings and psalms still influence how we worship today
