High school bands from South Dakota, Minnesota, and Nebraska are scheduled to participate in the competition.

“We are extremely honored to be invited to perform for the bands participating at this year’s competition.” said Boyd Perkins, director of the NSU Marching Wolves. “This will give the NSU marching band another venue to showcase not only their talents, but also the camaraderie and opportunities available to students interested in attending NSU.”

The NSU Marching Wolves are scheduled to perform at 2:30 p.m.

  • THE NSU MARCHING WOLVES ANNOUNCE TRIP TO HAWAII IN 2006

The NSU Marching Wolves will represent South Dakota at the 2006 commemoration of the 65th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii November 20-26, 2006. Following their appearance at the 2005 Presidential Inaugural Parade, The NSU Marching Wolves were invited to participate in the 2006 Waikiki Holiday Parade, which is dedicated to the 65th Anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Each band will bring a Pearl Harbor survivor from its respective state who will ride in a convertible in the parade as well as take part in the memorial ceremonies during the week. In addition, each band will represent a ship that was sunk in the attack and perform a memorial concert at the battleship Missouri museum.

The NSU Marching Wolves will do a statewide search for a survivor in Fall 2005.

The organizers of the parade feel this will be the last time the commemoration will be able to include actual survivors from the mainland as most of the survivors are now 85+ years old.

The invitation holds historical significance to the NSU Marching Wolves as the band will be commemorating its own 65th anniversary. The NSU Marching Wolves organization was founded by Harvey Moen in Fall 1941 just three months before Pearl Harbor was bombed. Due in part to its World War II roots, the band has begun to take special interest in recent years to honor those who have served our country both in the past and currently.

Students will fundraise to pay costs.

THE NSU MARCHING WOLVES ANNOUNCE 2005 DRUM MAJOR

The Marching Wolves will be led on the field in 2005 by sophomore music education major Jody Coburn. A proven high school standout, Ms Coburn is a 2004 graduate of Sioux Falls Washington High School where she served as drum major for the Warrior Marching Band and was academically ranked number one in a class of over four hundred students. Coburn is a South Dakota All-State Jazz saxophonist and has served in leadership roles as a saxophonist with the Sioux Falls Washington Warrior Marching Band. In addition, she has mentored younger students in marching basics and musicianship at Patrick Henry Middle School for both the Sioux Falls Lincoln and Sioux Falls Washington marching band programs. She is currently on the marching band staff at Sioux Falls Washington where her responsibilities include teaching marching drill, maintaining morale, and teaching marching fundamentals. Coburn lists two major goals for in 2005 for the nationally recognized NSU Marching Wolves:

" A major goal for me is always having awesome marching basics....I also would like to see the band sound more symphonic and have more terraced dynamics."
