About Northern State University
General Information
If you are interested in becoming a member
of the NSU Marching Wolves please contact
director Dr. Boyd Perkins either through
email or phone 605-626-2501
Interested members should register for the
band MUEN 120 for either “zero” or “one”
credit. If you register for “one” credit,
this credit will apply toward the three
credit general education requirement for
artistic expression in the humanities.
Participation in the Marching Wolves three
years meets this requirement in full.
Requirements
The NSU Marching Wolves is open to anyone
wishing to participate. There is no summer
camp requirement.
The NSU Marching Wolves meets Monday through
Thursday 3:00-4:30 on non-game weeks and
Monday through Friday 3:00-4:30 on game
weeks. On home game days the Marching Wolves
will rehearse at Swisher Field two and one
half hours prior to kick-off. The Marching
Wolves perform at approximately four to five
home games as well as one to two away
performances each Fall. It is also the
mission of the Marching Wolves to appear on
the national level approximately every two
to three years. The next national trip is in
2006 to Honolulu, Hawaii.
In the unlikely and rare cases when a
student is unable to meet the physical and
musical requirements of being a marching
member, alternate but highly important
non-marching arrangements can be made to
allow participation. Anyone with a desire to
be part of a quality organization is
welcome.
Color Guard
Color Guard is open to anyone who is
interested, although at the discretion of
the director and color guard captain, some
individuals may be asked to participate in a
different section depending upon ability.
The color guard rehearses at the same time
each week Monday through Thursday 3:00-4:30
on non-game weeks and Monday through Friday
3:00-4:30 on game weeks. Generally color
guard involves a few outside rehearsals set
up by the guard captain due to the important
visual demands of the section.
Drum Line
The drum line is open to all interested
musicians, although at the discretion of the
director and drum line instructor, some
individuals may be asked to participate in a
different section depending upon ability.
The drum line rehearses at the same time
each week Monday through Thursday 3:00-4:30
on non-game weeks and Monday through Friday
3:00-4:30 on game weeks. Generally
membership in the drum line involves a few
outside rehearsals set up by the section
leaders and drum instructor due to the
importance and demands of the music.
Class Conflicts
It is inevitable that class conflicts will
occur, however, you can still be a member of
the NSU Marching Wolves! A schedule conflict
list will be assembled during the first week
of classes. Please make every effort to
schedule class sections which do not
conflict with our rehearsal time. Although
every effort is made to keep everyone
informed, at times academic advisors may be
unclear about this policy and advise
students to not participate in the Marching
Wolves when in fact there is almost always a
solution that can be worked out. For this
reason please contact the director Dr. Boyd
Perkins or the Dean of the School of Fine
Arts Dr. Alan LaFave right away if you have
any questions or unusual circumstances.
For further more detailed information
regarding membership please see the student
handbook in the Current Members page.
