Lesson Summary:

•  Students will by introduced to different types of diseases and how these diseases effect the body. 
• Students will begin to understand the diversity of diseases that can affect the human body.
• Students will discover how to use primary sources to obtain knowledge and revise information into their own words, constructing a research paper.    

Prerequisites:

 Students must have a basic understanding of anatomy, and areas of disease study.

Lesson Objectives:

 To inform students about the areas that the study of diseases are usually broken down into as well as to inform students on the quantity of diseases that exist.

Assessment:

•  Presentations:  students will be graded for participation in oral presentations.
• Journal:  Students will receive a completion grade for the journal entry for the day.
• Research Paper:  Students will be graded on the research paper assigned.

Technology to be Used:

At least two internet sources must be found by the students in their research for the assigned paper.

Other Materials:

 The instructor will need to provide material in the form of articles to be used by the students in their presentation.  One article per group of four students.  The article should detail some type of disease.  The instructor will want to have filled out the answers to the rubrics before this activity so as to be properly prepared to assess group presentations.

Procedural Activities:

           1.  Lecture on diseases (5 min) (Verbal Linguistic)

2.  Reflect in daily journal how a disease would affect your life.  (5 min)  (Intrapersonal)

3.  Gather in groups of four to work on a provided article (Interpersonal).  Decide areas for each student to present.  The areas are disease causes, symptoms, treatment and outlook.  The group members, together, will decide where in the kingdoms the cause of the disease (e.g. bacteria, virus, fungi, etc) occurs.  (Naturalist).  Discuss the disease and create outline for use during brief oral presentation. (15 min)

4.  Quick oral presentations to begin getting basic ideas on different diseases.  (20 min) (Verbal Linguistic)

5.  Hand out paper rubric and discuss paper (5 min).
