| Lesson Summary: | This lesson is designed to help the students see how shapes are part of their everyday life through activities. Through this they will see how shapes come together to form structure for them in everyday life. |
| Prerequisites: | Students will need to be familiar with the basic shapes and know how to draw them as well. |

South Dakota State Math Standards Goal #2: Students will use the language of geometry to discover, analyze and communicate geometric concepts, properties, and relationships. Indicator #1: Students will use deductive and inductive reasoning to recognize and apply properties of geometric figures. Benchmark a: Identify characteristics of two-and-three dimensional shapes |
| Lesson Objectives: |
Students
will:
1. differentiate between two-and-three- dimensional shapes (logical/mathematical) 2. identify shapes they see every day on their way to school (visual/spatial) 3. draw new shapes using the basic shapes they know 4. learn new shapes like octagon and pentagon 5. create models with the shapes (body/kinesthetic) 6. explain why shapes are important (verbal/linguistic) 7. observe the environment around them for shapes |

| Technology to be Used: |
Using KidPix software the students will make puzzles for classmates to figure out as well as a puzzle I will make for them to do as well using shapes.

| Other Materials: | paper, sciccors, markers, chalk, chalkboard, bulletin board, clay, popsicle sticks, helper for a shape walk, string shoe boxes. |
| Procedural Activities: |
Making a
Model: The students will make a new shape that they learned using
the material provided. The criteria is that the shape is a new one
learned and is done well.
Puzzle: The students will use KidPix software and make puzzles for other students to figure out using shapes. The criteria is a variety of shapes are used. Shape Diagram: The students will go on a walk in groups around the school playground and find shapes within the area. Once they find a shape then they will draw the equipment as best as they can. The criteria is seeing how many shapes they recognize by their drawings.
