Lesson Summary:

Day One: Discuss with students, the importance of inventors. Ask students to name some qualities they think inventors should have and what makes a successful inventor. Have students make a list of the most important inventor qualities. These qualities will need to be present when the speaker presents the invention.

Day Two: Discuss the validity and necessity of patents and who issues a patent. Discuss inventors, what they invented and why. Students will choose an American inventor from history, such as Robert Fulton (steamboat), John Walker (matches), Samuel F.B. Morse (telegraph), Charles Goodyear (rubber), Elias Howe (sewing machine), Levi Strauss (blue jeans), Alexander G. Bell (telephone), Thomas Edison (phonograph), Richard Knerr (Frisbee), Ezra J. Warner (can opener), Emile Berliner’s (microphone), James Starley (bicycle), John Loud (ballpoint pen), Jesse W. Reno (escalator). The students will research the inventors during the last part of the class period to get an understanding of what they went through to come up with their inventions and obstacles they had.

Day Three: Give short quiz over famous inventors. Allow students time to research inventor in classroom and library. Have students get into groups of four or five and select a student to be the speaker, drawer, patent watcher, and committee member. If there are five in a group the extra person should help with drawing or patent watching. Allow students time to brainstorm and come up with an invention that they think is necessary. It should be a unique invention that they came up with as a group.

Day Four: Allow students time to work on invention in groups. The entire group will help with determining the invention and help create a persuasive brief speech including the need for their invention and its use for the speaker to present to the committee hoping to convince them of the need for their invention. They will also need to make either a model or a drawing of their invention.

Day Five: Present inventions and drawings/models to the committee.

Prerequisites:

Students will have already studied the American Revolution and know that there were many territorial changes in the United States. Students will also already know that the American Revolution brought about lots of changes in society and some inventions led up to and were created because of the Revolution.

Standards:

5.US.1.4. Students are able to identify the key changes leading to and resulting from growth and invention in the U.S. between the Revolution in 1865.

Recognize the impact of inventions on life in the United States. Examples:

· the steamboat, cotton gin, locomotives.

1. Help students realize the impact of inventions on life in America.

2. Personify how the inventors must have felt when presenting their invention to America.

3. Show students the growth and change in America from the Revolution to 1861 with new inventions.

Lesson Objectives:

1. Students will assess the qualities that they feel successful inventors must possess and the qualities they feel all successful inventors have in common.

2. Students will use their multiple intelligences to come up with their end projects.

3. Students will be able to list who issues a patent and for how long patents are valid.

4. Students will individually brainstorm inventions that they feel they could use in their everyday lives. Create, in small groups, one invention to develop from the list provided, determine its purpose, use and then design their invention.

Assessment:

1. Students will be graded on their participation within their group.

2. Students will be graded on the model or drawing they create for their invention.

3. The speech that the students create to show the need of their invention will be graded.

4. The years that the students come up with as when their patents need to be renewed and where they need to renew them will also be graded.

Technology to be Used:

1. Computers-students will use the internet to find information on inventors.

2. Students will use library material to do research.

Other Materials:

1. Construction paper

2. Crayons/Markers

3. Scissors

4. Chairs set up for committee on final day of lesson.

Procedural Activities:

1.Students will be the inventors that have to present their arguments as to why their invention needs to made and how it will affect society. (Bodily Kinesthetic & Verbal Linguistic)

2. Students will act as a judging committee that collaborates to makes their final decision in private and then presenting a public decision. (Interpersonal)

3. Students will draw a picture or create a model of their invention so the committee can have a visual of the invention. (Visual-Spatial)

4. Students will figure out how many years the patent will be valid for and in what years you have to remember to apply and purchase new patents. (Logical-Mathematical)
