(Aberdeen, S.D.) Northern State University students, Maria Morton, Aberdeen, and Julia Wakal, Edmonton, Alberta, will present a joint senior recital on Sun, Dec. 16, at 3 p.m. in the Berggren Recital Hall of Johnson Fine Arts Center.

Upon graduating, Morton hopes to teach elementary music. She is married to Carl Morton and has one son, Miles and one daughter, Mia. She is the daughter of Dennis and Patricia McDermott of Aberdeen.
Morton chose to attend Northern because of the strong music program offered as well as its close location to home. The smaller size of the university also played a roll in her choice.
Morton, a mezzo soprano and English Horn instrumentalist, will be performing “Il Mio Bel Foco,” by Bendetto Marcello, “du Bist Wie Eine Blume,” “Der Nussbaum,” and “Die Lotosblume,” by Schumann, “The Pasture,” by Charles Naginski, “O Can Ye Sew Cushions?” by Scottish Tunes, “American Lullaby,” by Gladys Rich, “Quiet City,” by Copland, “Only You From Starlight Express,” by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”. She will be accompanied by Clarissa Karsky and Carl Morton.

Upon graduating, Wakal plans to move back home in Victoria, British Columbia and to pursue a career in freelance performance and composition. She also hopes to continue with her education and pursue graduate studies in music later in the future.
Wakal, credits Dr. Grant Manhart for her decision to attend NSU. “During my five years attending Jazz Camp in Edmonton, Alberta, Dr. Manhart’s instruction was inspirational, and I wanted to continue to study under his instruction,” said Wakal.
