NSU Professor Receives Research Award
Released January 15, 2008
(Aberdeen, S.D.) William Bass, assistant professor of management
at Northern State University, received the 2008 Research Award from
The International Academy of Business and Public Administration
Disciplines (IABPAD) at their Winter Conference earlier this month.
Bass was selected for the honor for his article “Social Desirability
and Mexican/Anglo Orientation.”
Bass’ article focuses on a study conducted during the summer
of 2007 using a student sample drawn from a small, elite university
in Sonora, Mexico. It involved the empirical measurement of a number
of cultural concepts and an examination of the relationships among
the concepts of individualism, collectivism, socially desirable
responding, and Anglo and Mexican orientation. The study involved
testing a presumed relationship between subjects’ cultural
orientation, which varied in this study between an “Anglo
Orientation” and a “Mexican Orientation,” and
the level of “Socially Desirable Responding” possessed
by these same subjects.
“Members of a collectivist culture may seem especially gracious and hospitable to members of an individualistic culture while members of an individualist culture may seem very blunt and rude to those with a collectivist perspective,” said Bass. “The traditional view of socially desirable responding explains these differences.”
Bass has been a member of the Northern State University faculty
since 2001.
