38th Annual Jazz Festival Welcomes Pianist Mariano Morales

(Aberdeen, S.D.) The Northern State University Department of Music is proud to present the 38th annual South Dakota Jazz Festival, Thu. Jan 24. Jazz enthusiasts can enjoy hundreds of participants from the South Dakota public schools who will converge on NSU’s Johnson Fine Arts Center for the day long eevent. The festival will conclude with a concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Johnson Fine Arts Center. General admission is $5 at the door. There is no charge for students, gold pass holders and members of the Berggren Society.
This year’s featured clinician/artist is Mariano Morales of San Juan, P.R. Mariano is an internationally acclaimed composer with a Doctorate in Composition from Indiana University, and has performed with many recording artists, including Ricky Martin and Jennifer Lopez. Author of "Academic Music", Morales has received numerous commissions, and his works have been performed by distinguished ensembles such as the Royal Symphony Orchestra of Seville, the Netherlands Wind Ensemble, the American Composer's Orchestra and the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra, among others. Dr. Morales will adjudicate and work with the guest ensembles along with NSU's Terry Beckler and Dr. Timothy Woods.
Under the direction of NSU's Dr. Grant Manhart, the NSU Jazz Ensemble will join Morales on stage for the performance of several original selections. For further information, please contact Dr. Grant Manhart, at 605-626-2982.
