Sweets for Service: Come Discover the Heart of Service
Released February 6, 2008
(Aberdeen, S.D.) The Volunteer Service Clearinghouse (VSC) is hosting a fundraising event for its Alternative Break Program on Friday, Feb. 22, from 6-10 p.m., with an Alternative Break Service Showcase from 7-8 p.m. The event will be held at the Ramkota Hotel & Convention Center. There will be an art exhibit and sale from NSU art students, and musical entertainment will be provided by the NSU music department. Desserts and beverages will be served. Tickets are $30 for the general public and $10 for students with their student I.D. “Sweets for Service” showcases the achievements that NSU students associated the community have accomplished through the Alternative Break Program.
The Volunteer Service Clearinghouse is in its eighth year of sponsoring the Alternative Break Program, which sends groups of college students across the country, over their academic breaks, to work with social, cultural and environmental issues that face our society. Programs allow volunteers to serve at domestic violence shelters, do manual labor in the efforts of watershed conservation, and interact with indigenous mountain cultures.
“As a student-run organization, we are immensely proud of the accomplishments and service our students have provided the past eight years. We would like to share our experiences, our passion, and our service with the community,” said Megan Frewaldt who is on the Student Executive Board for the VSC. “Please join us in celebrating the incredible efforts of our young people and help to support them in their conquest to make a difference in our world. Enjoy decadent desserts, delicious coffees, and discover the heart of service!”
The majority of expenses that incur for the Alternative Break Program trips are the responsibility of the student, though some financial assistance from fundraisers is available.
