"A Writer Reads," Welcomes Lee Ann Roripaugh to the NSU Campus

Released March 10, 2008

(ABERDEEN, SD) Join “A Writer Reads” as it welcomes Lee Ann Roripaugh to the NSU campus. A native of Laramie, Wyo., Lee Ann attended Indiana University, where she received an undergraduate degree in piano performance and an MFA in creative writing. The reading will take place on Thu. Mar. 13, from 7-8 p.m., in the Reading Room of the Williams Library.

Lee Ann has published two books of poetry, “Beyond Heart Mountain,” (1998) and “Year of the Snake,” (2004). By employing Japanese mythology and descriptions of Wyoming's landscape, both books draw on Lee Ann's identity as an Asian American. She has won many awards, including the National Poetry Series, the Crab Orchard Poetry Series, and a Bush Fellowship. This Thursday she will read from her completed manuscript, Music School, a collection of short stories set in a music school in the Midwest. "Sugar Plum Fairy," a short story from the collection, was recently published in River Styx, a prestigious literary journal.

“A Writer Reads” thanks the South Dakota Humanities Council for the financial support that makes these readings possible, and the gracious folks of the Williams Library for providing a perfect setting for the readings.
