Northern Galleries Welcomes Wil Shynkaruk

Released March 11, 2008

Striped Vase(ABERDEEN, SD) The Northern State School of Fine Arts is pleased to announce an exhibit by Minnesota based artist Wil Shynkaruk. The exhibit will be held in the Isaac Lincoln Gallery in Lincoln Hall beginning on March 17. Shunkaruk’s pieces will be on display until May 2.

Shynkaruk is an associate professor and the Chair of the Department of Art and Design at Minnesota State University, Moorhead.

Shynkaruk has authored numerous articles, has displayed work in many states including Utah, Arizona, Montana, and North Dakota, as well as having several shows in Canada. He also has been a guest lecturer at universities and workshops throughout the states.

Of his work Shynkaruk said “In todays commercialized, mechanized, specialized, computerized homogenized, society, the act of producing handmade pottery is one of social commentary. Mass produced commercial dinnerware and kitchenware are economical and readily available to fulfill our daily functional needs. In this light, creating individual ceramic vessels by hand is inefficient and even archaic. Indeed, any business person will tell you that there are easier ways to make a living.”

“What I like about Wil Shynkaruk’s work is its sense of balance. A balance between the predictable and unpredictable … what art historians like to call the Apollonian and the Dionysian,” said Northern Galleries Director, Bill Hoar. “In other words, I think Wil captures what it means to be a human being that is, thinking logically and abstractly one minute, then being emotional and natural the next minute.”

The public is welcome to view Shynkaruk’s work from Mar. 17- May 2, in the Isaac Lincoln Gallery.
