NSU Alumna Receives Governor’s Award

(ABERDEEN, SD) Northern State University alumna, Sara Kumpf, received
the Governor’s Award for “Outstanding Employee with
a Disability” at the Governor’s Award luncheon on Tue,
Mar. 4, in Pierre.
Kumpf graduated from NSU with a B.S. in psychology and a minor in business in 2002, and began working as a vocational rehabilitation counselor for the South Dakota division of Rehabilitation Services in November of 2003. She assists individuals with disabilities in reaching their desired vocational outcomes. She credits the support of her family, Northern State and her position as a vocational rehabilitation counselor for her success.
“Northern State University has a lot to offer a student,” said Sara. “It gives them the tools necessary to be successful in their chosen careers.”
Kumpf, who was nominate for this award by Jerid Maskovich of the Department of Labor, is currently working on a masters in rehab and mental health counseling from Montana State University. She will finish her degree this summer and plans to become a certified rehabilitation counselor.
Both of Kumpf’s parents, as well as her sister and two of
her aunts, attended NSU.
She currently lives in Pierre with her husband, Terry, and their
two dogs, Bandit and Sandy.
