NATS Student Auditions to be Held at NSU

Released March 18, 2008

(ABERDEEN, SD) The North Dakota Chapter of National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) will hold their annual student auditions at Northern State University on Apr. 4 - 5. Over 125 students from North and South Dakota will be on the NSU campus singing in this year's auditions. The teachers of these singers are primarily voice professors at various North and South Dakota universities and colleges.

Beginning on Apr. 4 at 7 p.m. in the Berggren Recital Hall, the Grammy nominated baritone, Patrick Mason, and the pianist Mutsumi Motecki will present a recital featuring the works by Amy Beach, one of the first successful female American composers. All of the songs are show cased on Patrick Mason's 2006 Grammy nominated CD, “Songs of Amy Beach,” under the Bridge recording label.

Student auditions will be held on Sat, Apr. 5, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center. Preliminary rounds will be held from 8 a.m. - 12 p.m., followed by the semi-final and final rounds at 1:30- 5 p.m.

NATS is the largest association of teachers of singing in the world, with members in more than 25 countries. Many of the members are faculty at colleges and universities worldwide, and are active in performance as well. NATS is dedicated to encouraging the highest standards of singing through excellence in teaching and the promotion of vocal education and research.

"We at Northern are pleased to host the N.D. NATS auditions. It is the first time the auditions have been held in South Dakota, and we are encouraged by the large number participants from both North and South Dakota,” said Darci Bultema, NSU voice instructor. “Additionally, we are thrilled to have the esteemed musicians, Patrick Mason and Mutsumi Motecki, perform for our students and community."

The recital, as well as the auditions, are free and open to the public.
