NSU Welcomes Grammy Nominated Baritone

(ABERDEEN, SD) The Northern State University Department of Music is pleased to present a guest recital featuring Grammy nominated baritone, Patrick Mason, and pianist Mutsumi Motecki. The recital, which will feature to pieces from Mason’s 2006 Grammy nominated “Songs of Amy Beach,” will be held on Fri, April 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Berggren Recital Hall in the NSU Johnson Fine Arts Center.

Patrick Mason was nominated for a Grammy Award in the "Best Classical Vocal Performance" Category in 2006. He has been a soloist with the Waverly Consort, the Boston Camarata and Schola Antiqua. He has premiered operas by Tod Machover, John Duffy and Randall Shinn in Tokyo, New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Philadelphia and New Mexico. As a recitalist he as appeared in London's Wigmore Hall, the Cairo Opera House, at festivals in Luxembourg, Holland and throughout the United States. Mr. Mason has worked in recording and performance with Leonard Bernstein, Elliott Carter, George Crumb, John Musto, Ellen Zwillich and Barbara Kolb, and has sung with Speculum Musicae, the Rochester Philharmonic, the Syracuse Symphony, the Colorado Springs Philharmonic and the Greeley Philharmonic. The former head of the Voice Area at SUNY Fredonia, Mr. Mason has taught master classes at the Hochschule fur Musik in Berlin, the American University in Cairo and throughout the United States.


Mason is a Berton Coffin Faculty Fellow at the University of Colorado in Boulder and is the vocal coordinator of the John Duffy Composer’s Institute where he works with young singers and composers to create new works for the musical stage.

Mutsumi Moteki has been active as a vocal coach and accompanist. She received her training at the Westminster Choir College and University of Michigan as well as prestigious summer programs such as Music Academy of the West, Steans Institute for Young Artists, Franz-Schubert-Institut in Baden bei Wien, and Conservatoire de musique in Genève. She is currently an associate professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where she teaches singing diction, vocal repertoire, heads the musical staff of CU Opera, and is a member of newly formed Collaborative Piano Faculty.

There is no charge to attend this event and the public is cordially invited to attend.
